Preliminary Education Specialist Credential
Department of Learning and Teaching
Our Preliminary Education Specialist Credential program prepares candidates to work with students with mild to moderate disabilities from kindergarten through 22 years of age. The combination of theory and practical experience provides graduates with a solid understanding, knowledge and skill set to function as highly effective special educators. The program is nationally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children, and uses the council’s performance-based electronic portfolio competency model for evaluation and credential recommendation criteria. Upon graduation, credential students are recommended to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the Preliminary Education Specialist Credential with an authorization in mild to moderate disabilities.
Please note that most candidates now earn their Preliminary Education Specialist Credential concurrently with an M.Ed. in Special Education through our Master's Credential Cohort: Special Education. This program is offered in a cohort-based 2-year format and offers discounted tuition for 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.
