HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

…There is a Hazardous Materials spill:
1. Activate the building fire alarm.
2. Evacuate the area, closing doors behind you to isolate the spill.
3. Call Public Safety ext. 2222
4. Deny entry.
5. Await assistance.

Chemical Spill On The Body:
1. Remove contaminated clothing at once.
2. Flood the exposed area with running water from a safety shower or faucet for at least 15 minutes.
3. Call Public Safety at ext. 2222.

For spills not involving immediate danger to life and/or property:
1. Evacuate the immediate area and deny access.
2. Notify area supervisor.
3. Consult the Material Safety Data Sheet before attempting to clean up to determine the hazards associated with the chemical.
4. Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and attempt to confine the spill.
5. Place clean up materials in bag and label as HAZARDOUS WASTE.
Any spill that can potentially cause injury to a person or property must be reported to the Environmental & Safety at exts.  2226/2595.

Radioactive Material:
Spill:
1. Confine the spill immediately.  Do not attempt to clean up the spill
2. Contact the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) at ext. 8885 or cell phone at (619)606-1285.
3. Call Public Safety at ext. 2222.
4. Permit no one the resume work in the area or leave the premises without approval of the RSO.

Spill On The Body:
1. Remove contaminated clothing.

3. Call the RSO at ext. 8885 or cell phone at (619)606-1285 and Public Safety at ext. 2222.

Ingestion of Radioactive Material:
Accidental ingestion or swallowing of radioactive material should be treated like other types of poisoning. Large volumes of water should be swallowed, followed by throat stimulation by the fingers to induce vomiting. Call Public Safety at ext. 2222 or (619) 260-2222.
