Photo Exhibit Showcases “China’s Olympian Human Rights Challenges”

While gold medals signify the ultimate success in 2008 Olympic competition taking place in Beijing this August, a different kind of legacy and mettle is being showcased by Human Rights Watch from Aug. 20 to Nov. 8, 2008 in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Gallery.

The exhibit “China’s Olympian Human Rights Challenges” features Dutch photographer Kadir van Lohuizen’s images of Beijing as it prepared for the Olympics. It shows the plight of Chinese citizens who were affected most — migrant workers who built key infrastructure, petitioners whose temporary housing in Beijing was demolished, residents who were evicted from their homes to make way for Olympic venues and peaceful demonstrators of China’s government who were jailed or placed under house arrest before the Olympics began.
