About IPJ

Department of Public Information/Nongovernmental Organization (DPI/NGO)

 

The DPI/NGO Section is part of the department’s Outreach Division and acts as its liaison between the United Nations and NGOs and other civil society organizations. It oversees partnerships with associated NGOs and provides a wide range of information services to them, including weekly NGO briefings, communication workshops, an annual NGO conference and an annual orientation program for newly associated NGOs.

The IPJ has attended the following conferences of DPI/NGO:

UNESCO Headquarters

61st Annual Conference - September 3-5, 2008

 

IPJ Senior Program Officer Diana Kutlow coordinated a caucus on conflict prevention and resolution, with the assistance of rapporteur Christina Papazoglou, the human rights program executive for the World Council of Churches. Delegates from Congo, England, France, Switzerland and the United States examined best practices on the local level (e.g., addressing urban violence in the slums of Paris) and on the national level (e.g., holding perpetrators accountable for sexual violence during war in Congo). The conference, with the theme "Reaffirming Human Rights for All," was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

 

 

Karla Alvarez at UN Headquarters

60th Annual Conference - September 5-7, 2007

 

IPJ staff members Karla Alvarez, Diana Kutlow and Elena McCollim participated in the conference at U.N. Headquarters in New York, which focused on "Climate Change: How It Impacts Us All." Both the IPJ's Distinguished Lecture Series and WorldLink Program examined the environment for the 2007-8 academic year.

 

After the conference, the IPJ presented at the University of San Diego’s 18th Annual Social Issues Conference on "Climate Change and the Responsibility to Protect," and during International Education Week at San Diego Community College, "Did the Nobel Committee Get it Right?" The IPJ also co-sponsored a screening of "An Inconvenient Truth."

Elena McCollim, Anne Hoiberg and Dee Aker

58th Annual Conference - September 7-9, 2005

 

IPJ staff members Dee Aker and Elena McCollim partipated in the conference at U.N. Headquarters in New York, which had the theme, "Our Challenge: Voices for Peace, Partnerships and Renewal." Upon their return, McCollim and Anne Hoiberg of UNA-San Diego reported on the conference at the IPJ.

57th Annual Conference - September 8-10, 2004

 

IPJ staff member Dee Aker participated in the conference at U.N. Headquarters in New York, which had the theme "Millennium Development Goals: Civil Society Takes Action."
