Greek Life
Membership in the Greek community provides a unique experience for undergraduate students. For some, it serves as a support network and a place to develop friendships. For others, it offers the chance to become involved with community service projects, leadership opportunities and scholastic achievements. For most, it is all of these things, plus a lifelong bond of brotherhood or sisterhood.
The general fraternities and sororities are open to students of all majors and class standings. All students must complete 12 units at USD or 24 transfer units to be eligible for sorority and fraternity membership. Therefore, first-semester Freshman students are ineligible to join a fraternity or sorority; this allows for them to adjust to the academic rigor of college and build a foundation outside of membership in a large organization. Transfer students with 23 or fewer units also are ineligible to join. Women must have a cumulative GPA equal to the lowest sorority minimum, and men must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA to be eligible. Formal fraternity and sorority recruitment processes take place in the Spring semester each academic year. Fraternities also conduct a fall membership selection process.
