Dear USD Families,

Warm holiday greetings from the Office of Parent Relations! We hope you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and imagine you are eagerly awaiting your student’s return home at the end of the semester. Until then, your student will be engaged with finals as late as December 21. To help support your student during this time, we encourage you to pay special attention to the Vice President for Student Affairs’ message, library hours, Finals Care Packages, and University Ministry services. These services are planned in December to prepare your student for their studies, take a moment to enjoy delicious treats, and allow time to reflect on their accomplishments and struggles during the fall semester. On a separate note, we extend our congratulations to those of you whose students are completing their graduation requirements this fall semester.

We wish all of your students the best of luck with finals and end-of-semester projects. The Office of Parent Relations wishes you and your family safe travels and look forward to welcoming your students back to campus in 2013.

Blessings and peace during this Christmas and holiday season!

Sincerely,

Renda Quinn Karina Viaud Regina Griffing

Message from Vice President of Student Affairs

Carmen Vasques Dear USD Parents and Families,

The month of December can be a stressful, yet exciting time for students. As your student prepares for final exams and eagerly anticipates the winter break, your support will help your son or daughter successfully navigate through these last few weeks of the semester and transition into the holiday season.

During finals, many students experience high levels of anxiety, struggle with time-management, and often compromise their physical health in an effort to ensure academic success. Please talk with your student about the importance of implementing healthy coping strategies during this time. Good nutrition and proper sleep, combined with exercise and physical activity, will serve to help your student stay focused and manage the various tasks ahead. If your student needs additional support during this time, please encourage him or her to visit the Counseling Center (http://www.sandiego.edu/usdcc or phone: (619) 260-4655).

Parents and students have acknowledged the importance of revisiting family expectations to ensure a positive winter break. In addition to anticipating a well-deserved break, college students typically have a strong desire to reconnect with family members and old friends, along with maintaining their college relationships. Your son or daughter may be home for over a month, and during this extended time period, difficulties related to college independence and family expectations can arise. This can also be a challenging time for sibling relationships, as roles and expectations have shifted while your college student has been away. Communicate and agree on clear expectations, create regular opportunities to check in throughout the month, and discuss compromises as challenges are presented. Facilitating communication between all members of the household goes a long way to foster a positive experience for everyone.

The winter break is an important time to reflect on your student’s USD experience. Celebrate your student’s successes and develop strategies to address challenges or concerns. If your student is struggling academically, the Center for Student Success can help your son or daughter with referrals to various USD resources designed to support his or her academic success (http://www.sandiego.edu/usdcss or phone: (619) 260-5995).

Thank you for being a caring member of our USD community. Please continue to show your Torero pride by supporting the many athletic events occurring throughout the winter break (http://usdtoreros.cstv.com). I look forward to our continued partnership in 2013.

Happy Holidays,

Carmen M. Vazquez
Vice President, Student Affairs
