Parents and Families of Transfer students are invited to a reception hosted by the Office of Parent Relations. Learn how this office will be of assistance during your time at USD.

New Student Welcome

The program begins! An official welcome provided by Dr. Donald Godwin, Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. A program overview by Elizabeth Pun, Transfer Team Chair, will also be discussed.

Small Group Meeting

2:30pm – 3:45pm

Various locations in the University Center

Directly following the Welcome, you will be meeting with your Small Group. You have been assigned to a student-led small group made up of other new Transfer students. You can identify your small group by the number on your nametag. Your Transfer Team leader will take you to an assigned meeting area. This is the first opportunity to get to know the group you will be spending time with throughout the program.

Pizza Night at Giovanni’s

4:30pm – 6:15pm

Meet in front of the University Center

This is a Transfer student only event! Enjoy all the pizza you can eat while playing pool and hanging out with your fellow Transfers. Worried about coming alone and not knowing anyone there? Don’t be! There are many other Transfers in the same boat as you, so come and meet them! Transportation from USD to Giovanni’s will be provided, although you may drive separately if you wish. Tickets can be purchased at the University Center Box office for $10. If you have also purchased tickets for the Sea World event later this evening, transportation will be provided fro Giovanni’s to Sea World.

An Evening at Sea World

7:00pm – 11:00pm

An opportunity to get off campus and explore one of the most well known places in San Diego! There will be an exclusive USD area within the park where you will be able to snack on desserts and have a chance to get up close and personal with some special animal guests. Tickets are available at the University Center Box Office for $22. Transportation from Giovanni’s will begin boarding at 6:30pm. If you choose to not attend Giovanni’s beforehand, buses for Sea World will be boarding at 6:30pm in front of the University Center.

This program provides an overview of today’s sessions and events. An explanation of what to expect throughout the day and of how the Breakout Sessions work will be given.

Nuts and Bolts of the Transfer Transition

9:15am – 10:15am

It's never too early for you to begin mapping out how to best spend your term at USD and still graduate on time!  Advisors will give you tips on how to navigate the systems that can help you achieve your goals of graduation and avoid pitfalls Transfer students have faced in the past.

Morning Breakout Sessions

IPJ

These breakouts provide an opportunity to decide which session will be the most helpful to you. As a Transfer student, you may find that you have less time to get involved, participate in Study Abroad, or find internships. With these sessions, you can get a head start by learning how to accomplish these things at USD with the time you have.

Financial Aid (IPJ – E/F)

If you are receiving ANY FORM of financial assistance (other than an Athletic Award or Merit Scholarship), you are REQUIRED to attend this meeting. Find out what it is you need to know about applying, receiving, and reapplying for Financial Aid. All questions about scholarships, grants, student employment, and college loans will be answered. This session will end at 11:10am and is not repeated at 11:15am.

Getting Involved (IPJ – A)

Hear from the Student Leadership and Involvement Center (SLIC) about why getting involved at USD can make a huge impact on your experience her. Learn about all of your options: Student organizations, Greek Life, Associated Students, University Ministry, and much more! We can definitely find something that fits your interests. Were you involved at your previous school? We can find something similar for you here at USD. 

Internships and Career Services (IPJ – B)

Career Services is a very important office that promotes the professional development of USD students. The staff in this office provides help with internship/job strategies, resume and interview preparation, and graduate school options. They are also available to help with choosing a major. Don’t wait to explore your options until your senior year – get started now by seeking career counseling and personalized service from this office.

Study Abroad (IPJ – C/D)

USD ranks #1 in the nation for undergraduate study abroad participation! This is a fun and educational way to add global perspective to your studies at USD. A representative from the International Center will explain the different types of programs and locations that are available and how to find the one that is right for you.

Meet with your Transfer Team leader and your small group in the IPJ’s beautiful Garden of the Sea to enjoy a delicious lunch.

Afternoon Breakout Sessions

1:05pm – 1:35pm

Veteran and Active Duty (IPJ – F)

You will meet key administrators who are aware of your needs and challenges as a Veteran or Active Duty student. They will serve as resources for you during your time at USD. You will also meet current Veteran or Active Duty students who will be available to answer your questions.

Students over 25 (IPJ – E)

This session will give you the opportunity to meet current students who are over the age of 25 and have managed to become very engaged in the campus community and in their learning.

Commuter Students (IPJ – A/B)

Torero Squad members and key administrators will be providing information about getting connected to the campus, USD’s community standards, and the services provided specifically for USD Commuter students.

Residential Students (IPJ – C/D)

Required for all new resident students. Learn more about your Resident Assistant (RA) and the community you will be living in for the year.

How USD is Different – Things YOU Need to Know

IPJ Theater

Every college and university has different processes, resources, expectations, and cultures. You will find that there is even a different vocabulary! This session will assist you in learning about how USD differs from other universities.

Transfer Convocation

2:45pm- 3:15pm

IPJ Theater

This program introduces new Transfer students to the academic mission of USD. You will meet key academic administrators and faculty, learn more about USD’s commitment to our mission, and take the Academic Integrity Pledge. This is a special ceremony that symbolizes your transition to becoming a Torero!

Reception

3:15pm – 3:45pm

IPJ Garden of the Sea

Join us at one of USD’s most beautiful locations to enjoy refreshments and interact with several key administrators and faculty members.

Harbor Cruise

4:30pm – 8:30pm

Meet in front of the University Center

Relax and enjoy the sights of the San Diego Harbor during the last event of Transfer Torero Days! As one of the most popular events, the Harbor Cruise is only for new Transfer and International students. Food, beverages, and entertainment will be provided so don’t miss out! You can purchase tickets at the University Center Box Office for $15. Buses will begin boarding in front of the University Center at 4:30pm and the boat will push off from the dock promptly at 6:00pm.

New F-1 International Students – Mandatory Meeting

8:30am – 11:00am

Salomon Hall (inside of Maher Hall)

An informational meeting for international students in which you will learn about immigration regulations and other US laws to make sure that your stay in the US is not only pleasant but also safe and lawful. Orientation also includes information about health insurance, immunization requirements, how to navigate through everyday life in the U.S., and a discussion on programs and events offered by the OISS. In addition, the orientation will cover health care related issues common among international students, including a summary of the functions of the Student Health Center, a brief overview of the mechanisms of the U.S. healthcare system, how health insurance works and how to access your USD health insurance plan.

Academic Troubleshooting

9:00am – 5:00pm

If you are undeclared or wish to have a major in the College of Arts and Sciences but have not registered for classes or have general questions about your academic schedule, please drop-in and meet with Assistant Deans Neena Din or Pauline Powell.

Campus Errands

9:00am – 5:00pm

This is an ideal time for taking care of last-minute tasks such as getting your Campus Card, buying your parking permit, paying your bill, and finding your classrooms. Transfer Leaders will be available to answer questions at the Torero Days Information Desk in front of the University Center.

Campus Tours

11:00am and 1:00pm

For those who are interested, the Transfer Team leaders will provide a campus tour at 11am and again at 1pm. The tours will meet at the Torero Days Information Desk in front of the University Center.

Business Students Orientation

11:30am – 1:00pm

Location TBD

An orientation program designed specifically for incoming business students. Program highlights include a welcome from Dean Pyke, PhD, an overview of the Passport Program, and a look at resources, organizations, and how to get started as a business student at USD. Pizza will be served.

Café Coyote in Old Town

This is the first social event of the year hosted by the Transfer Student Organization (TSO). Continue socializing with new Transfer students and meet current ones over delicious tacos in Old Town! This first Taco Tuesday is free for new transfer students. Transportation will be available in front of the University Center at 5:30 p.m.
