LRC Circulation Policy

You must have a valid barcoded USD ID card or current visitor card on file to borrow books.

  • Visitor Card:
    - USD alumni (including paralegals)
    - Members of the California Bar with a San Diego business address are eligible for off- campus circulation privileges.

Most law materials do not circulate. Please check at the Circulation Desk to determine whether a specific item circulates.

Circulating materials are loaned for two-week periods to USD students and patrons with visitor cards. Patrons may renew items twice, either in person or by telephone, as long as no "holds" have been placed on the materials. If the material you want is checked out, you may place a "hold" on it at the Circulation Desk. You will be notified when the item is returned to the LRC.

A reminder notice that an item is overdue is sent one week after the due date. Two weeks after the due date a $10.00 non-refundable service fee per item is assessed. Five weeks after the due date, we assess a charge of $50.00 per item or the cost of replacement, whichever is higher, in addition to the $10.00 per item service fee. The LRC staff will check the most current Books in Print for replacement price and availability.

Reserve Materials may be borrowed by designated patrons for up to three hours. The loan may be renewed if no one else requests the material. Reserve items may be taken out of the building but must be returned on time. Patrons will be fined $5 per hour or any part of an hour for overdue items. Reserve items cannot be renewed by telephone.

Overnight Reserves are clearly labeled. These items may be borrowed after 9 P.M. or three hours before closing, whichever is earlier. Only USD law student and faculty are accorded this privilege. Items are due within the first hour the library is open. Overdues are subject to a $5 per hour fine.
