USD School of Law, in partnership with Miller & Chevalier, announces the the first annual USD School of Law/Miller & Chevalier Tax Controversy Conference. This informative and comprehensive program will explore "Washington Approaches to Resolving Tax Controversies." Sam Maruca, the first Internal Revenue Service (IRS) director of transfer pricing operations, large business & international (LB&I) division, will deliver the keynote address. December California Bar Swearing-In Ceremony and Luncheon

Dean Stephen Ferruolo and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations is hosting a celebratory luncheon at Tom Ham's Lighthouse immediately after the State of California Bar Swearing-In Ceremony at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. All July 2012 Bar Passers will be hosted by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Bar passers are welcome to bring family, friends and guests to the luncheon at a cost of $20 per person. USD School of Law's Graduate and International Programs on the Road
USD School of Law is a long-standing leader in graduate legal education and offers the following Master of Laws (LLM) programs: Comparative Law; Taxation; Business and Corporate Law; International Law; and General. Admission representatives from the law school's Graduate and International Programs are traveling to 13 U.S. universities and will be touring Europe this fall, presenting information sessions in Madrid, Milan and Paris. USD School of Law Launches New Intellectual Property Clinic
USD School of Law has launched a new Intellectual Property (IP) Law Clinic, giving students the opportunity to provide free legal services while gaining real-world experience. Working under the supervision of a local law firm, IP Clinic students provide legal services to San Diego companies on a variety of intellectual property issues including trademarks, patents, copyrights and trade secrets. USD School of Law Launches New Veterans Legal Clinic; Names Supervising Attorney
In August, USD School of Law launched the new Veterans Legal Clinic, which will provide free legal assistance to veterans in disputes with for-profit institutions over the use of GI Bill funds and predatory lending associated with education loans. Legal services provided by the clinic will range from advice to identification of potential claims to representation of student veterans in litigation, arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. Robert "Bob" F. Muth has been named supervising attorney for the Veterans Legal Clinic. Read more.
Women's Law Caucus Annual Auction - Call For Donations
USD's Women's Law Caucus is hosting their annual Faculty Auction on February 14, 2013, to raise money for the Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) and various charities assisting women in the San Diego area. Alumni may donate an outing with students to the live auction. In the past, activities have included poker games, lunches and rounds of golf. Outings can be individualized by specifying when, where and how many students can participate. An alternative to donating to the live auction is contributing items to the silent auction. Examples of past donations are gift cards, gift baskets, study aids and USD apparel. Read more about how to participate.
USD School of Law Students Prepare for Legal Profession With the Oath Of Professionalism
As USD School of Law admitted the 2012 entering class in August, incoming students took an Oath of Professionalism administered by presiding judge of the San Diego Superior Court, USD Law Alumni Board member and 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient the Honorable Robert J. Trentacosta, '79.
In Memoriam: Law School Adjunct Professor Jim Krause '75
USD Trustee and law school Board of Visitor Member James Krause, '75, passed away on August 16, 2012, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife Gale and three sons: Andrew, Mark and David.
Jim joined USD's Board of Trustees in 2009 and served on the audit and student affairs committees. He graduated from USD School of Law in 1975, became an adjunct professor in 2007, and was a longtime member of the law school's Board of Visitors. Classroom 2B in USD's Warren Hall was named for Gale and James Krause in 2005 in recognition for their generous support of USD School of Law's endowment campaign.

USD School of Law Remembers Verna Dennehy
Verna Ruth Dennehy, a thirty-year veteran of the law school records office, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 20, with her family by her side. She retired in 2005. Many alumni and law school staff and faculty remember her well. Loved by the students, Verna was their confidante and advisor. Her endless energy, keen knowledge of her job, and fun and sassy attitude left a positive and indelible mark upon the law school. Read more.

USD School of Law received contracts and grants awarded in 2012 from the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, the Paul Bechtner Foundation, SDG&E, the San Diego Foundation's Board of Governors, the California Center for Sustainable Energy, and the State Bar of California. Read more.

Alex M. Calero '05 New Vice Chair of the California Young Lawyers Association
Alex M. Calero, '05, becomes the vice chair of the California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA) on October 14, 2012, upon conclusion of the State Bar of California Annual Meeting in Monterey, California. Created in 1965, CYLA is the nation's largest association of new lawyers. All lawyers licensed to practice in California with five years or less of practice or who are 36 years old or younger are automatically members of CYLA. CYLA sponsors educational programs, networking opportunities and other resources geared for new attorneys. Read more.
USD Law Librarian Brent Bernau '85 Profiled in The Daily Transcript
USD School of Law Collections Development Librarian Brent Bernau, '85, was profiled in The Daily Transcript. The article highlights Bernau's career achievements including his recent tenure as vice president of the San Diego Area Law Libraries (SANDALL). Bernau followed his heart. He began as a law librarian, dabbled in home improvement and real estate appraising and even owned his neighborhood coffee shop. Jeffrey E. Thoma '81 Re-Elected to National Criminal Defense Bar Association Board
Jeffrey E. Thoma, '81, was re-elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the Association's 54th Annual Meeting in San Francisco on July 28. He has served on NACDL's Board of Directors since 2009. For the past five years, Jeff has served as CLE Program Chair for NACDL's Forensic Science & the Law Seminar. He has also served as co-chair of NACDL's Death Penalty Committee. Read more.
