Legal Research Databases

Off-campus access to these databases is limited to USD students, faculty, and staff. In order to be granted access, you will need to provide your name and the barcode number from the back of your USD identification card.

  • AudioCaseFiles: The premier audio and video training and research resource featuring some of the best litigators in the nation. You will find audio opinions for the most commonly assigned cases for first– and second–year law students. To register with AudioCaseFiles, click on the link above to go to the registration page. Select "My school or firm is: a member" and then "I am affiliated with a: school". Select "University of San Diego School of Law" from the drop-down menu. Enter your personal information, including your USD e-mail address and a password of your choosing. You will receive a registration confirmation via e-mail.
  • CALI Lessons: Increase your knowledge of an area of legal study by completing the lessons online or downloading them and completing them on your computer. The LRC also has the lessons on a CD-Rom at the Circulation Desk. In order to retrieve the CALI authorization code that you will need when creating your account, you will need to log in with your MySanDiego username and password: CALI login information.
  • Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP): A weekly index of legal periodicals arranged by subject headings. The listing is also cross-indexed by publication title. You will be required to login with your MySanDiego username and password in order to access this page.
  • Congressional Research Digital Collection (CRDC): Full text of Congressional Committee Prints from 1830 to the present and Congressional Research Service Reports from 1916 to the present.
  • Congressional Hearings Digital Collection (CHDC): Full text of Congressional Committee Hearings, as well as related reports, statistical analyses, exhibits, and correspondence inserted into the record from 1824 to the present.
  • HeinOnline: Digital copies of law reviews of U. S. law schools. Coverage begins with the first issue of each publication.
  • Human Rights Documents Online: Documents edited by Human Rights Internet, which serves as an unofficial depository for over 350 non-governmental human rights organizations worldwide. Coverage is from 1980-2003.
  • IntelliConnect (Including CCH Tax Library): Includes state & federal primary law materials, reporters, practice materials, & journals. Click on the link under "New User?" and follow the instructions on the screen to create your own User ID and password. Enter your search expression in the search box at the top and hit the "Go" button.
  • InterAm database: Primarily a Latin American law database developed by the National Law Center for InterAmerican Free Trade. Canadian materials are also included because Canada is a NAFTA partner. In order to retrieve the InterAm username and password, you will need to log in with your MySanDiego username and password: InterAm login information.
  • JSTOR: Full-text searchable archive of core scholarly journals. Current issues are not available on JSTOR. If you need help getting started with JSTOR, read the JSTOR Search Tips.
  • LLMC-Digital Database: Older publications of the U. S. Government. Titles being digitized and added to the database are organized in three categories:
    • U.S. Federal-Executive Collection: Publications generated by any U.S. federal department, agency, commission, or other rule-making and enforcement body dependent upon the executive supervision of the President of the United States.
    • U.S. Federal-Judicial Collection: Publications generated by any of the U.S. Federal Courts, as well as those statutory organizations, such as the Federal Judicial Center, which facilitate the administration of the courts.
    • U.S. Federal-Legislative Collection: Publications generated by the U.S. Congress, its committees and temporary commissions, and those agencies, such as the GAO, Library of Congress, and the Copyright office, which report directly to Congress.
    • For current publications of the U. S. Government use GPOACCESS.
  • LegalTrac: Search title, author and subject fields for articles published in law-related journals and newspapers. Once you find a relevant article, search SALLY to determine the availability of the journal.
  • LEXIS:
  • Making of Modern Law: The most comprehensive full-text collection of Anglo-American legal treatises of the period from 1800-1926. Click "Proceed" on the first page and then select a database on the second page.
  • OnLAW: CEB's full-text database of California-specific treatises and forms.
  • RIA: Full-text access to both state & federal primary & secondary tax law materials.
  • Social Science Research Network (SSRN): Published papers relating to the social sciences with abstracts and full bibliographic descriptions. Also provides information on seminars and other social science-related events. Choose desired network from frame on the left side of the SSRN homepage.
  • Tax Management Portfolios Plus: Electronic Collection of Tax Management Portfolios.
  • United Nations Documents:
    • AccessUN: Index to United Nations documents including Official Records, masthead documents, draft resolutions, meeting records, UN Sales Publications, and the UN Treaty Series citations. Many are available in full-text on this Web site. Those not available online are reproduced on microfiche and are available for viewing at the LRC.
    • United Nations Treaty Collection: Treaties and international agreements entered into by member states and registered with the United Nations.
  • Westlaw:
