American Judges Association - Twenty-Fourth Annual Law Student Essay Competition

  • Subject: Is it constitutional for a legislative body to require a DNA test for all persons arrested and charged with a felony?
  • Deadline for entry is June 1, 2012.
    • First Place: $3,000, essay published in AJA's journal, Court Review.
    • Second Place: $1,500
    • Third Place: $1,000

American College of Employee Benefits Counsel - Eighth Annual Employee Benefits Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any topic in the field of employee benefits law.
  • Deadline for entry: June 1, 2012.
    • Clarin M. Schwartz Memorial Award: $1,500, honored during the College's black tie dinner on September 15, 2012 in Boston, MA, paper may be published in an employee benefits publication, and paper will be distributed to Fellows of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel.
    • Sidney M. Perlstadt Memorial Award: $1,500, honored during the College's black tie dinner on September 15, 2012 in Boston, MA, paper may be published in an employee benefits publication, and paper will be distributed to Fellows of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel.

American College of Trust and Estate Counsel - Mary Moers Wenig 2012 Student Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any topic in the field of trusts and estates law, including taxation.
  • Deadline for entry is June 1, 2012.
    • First Place: $5,000
    • Second Place: $3,000
    • Third Place: $1,000
    • Variable Honorable Mention Prizes

Asian Pacific American Bar Association Educational Fund - 2012 Robert T. Matsui Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any topic of interest that reasonably relates to Asian Pacific Americans and the law.
  • Deadline for entry is June 1, 2012.

LexisNexis - Thirteenth Annual James William Moore Federal Practice Award

  • Subject: Any topic in the area of federal civil practice and procedure, including the civil jurisdiction and venue rules of the federal courts. Submissions on the topics of federal courts management, federal appellate procedure, and alternative dispute resolution will also be acceptable.

  • Deadline for entry is June 1, 2012
    • First Place: $2,000, full set of Moore's Federal Rules Pamphlets, and $1,000 to the winning entrant's law review or journal.

University of Connecticut School of Law: Student Legal Writing Competition

  • Subject: Legal issue affecting persons struggling with homelessness, mental illness, addiction, or substance abuse.
  • Deadline for entry is June 1, 2012.
    • First Place: $750
    • Second Place: $500
    • Third Place: $250

New York State Bar Association - Committee on Animals and the Law Student Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any topic in the area of animal law.
  • Deadline for entry is June 29, 2012.
    • First Place: $1,000, potential to be published in Laws & Paws
    • Second Place: $500

California Supreme Court Historical Society - 2012 Student Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any aspect of California legal history, ranging from the Supreme Court itself, and its justices and decisions, to local events of legal historical importance—including biography, significant cases, independent state interpretation, the California Constitution, and reorganization of the court system, as well as areas of law such as criminal law, civil rights, family law, tort liability, environmental law, and taxation—in any time period from 1846 to the present.
  • Deadline for entry is June 30, 2012.

Union Internationale Des Avocats - 3rd Jacques Leroy International Prize Business and Human Rights Student Competition

  • Subject: "The Jurist and the Development of Human Rights in the Business World."
  • Deadline for entry is June 30, 2012.
    • First Place: €1000, free registration at the UIA Congress in Dresden, transportation and accommodation in Dresden from October 31-November 4, 2012 for the UIA Congress, and a year's free membership to the UIA.

Tannenwald Foundation for Excellence in Tax Scholarship - 2012 Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any federal or state tax-related topic.
  • Deadline for entry is July 3, 2012.
    • First Place: $5,000
    • Second Place: $2,500
    • Third Place: $1,500

James E. Beckley Securities Arbitration and Law Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any aspect of securities law; securities arbitration; The Federal Arbitration Act, Title 9, US Code, Section 1-14; or FINRA Code of Arbitration, effective April 16, 2007 and any changes or proposed changes to that Code. The writing can be based in theory or practice, but should ultimately advocate a position on the topic area chosen.
  • Deadline for entry is September 10, 2012.
    • First Place: $1,000
    • Second Place: $750
    • Third Place: $500

Association of Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni, Inc.- 2012 Writing Competition

  • Subject: Any subject in the field of securities law.
  • Deadline for entry is November 16, 2012.
    • First Place: $5,000
    • Second Place: $3,000
    • Third Place: $2,000
