Michael Berch

Visiting Professor of Law

Areas of Expertise

Professor Berch teaches and writes in the areas of federal courts, civil procedure, and professional responsibility.

Professional Experience

Berch joined the attorney general's honors program with the U.S. Department of Justice and worked on a variety of high profile criminal cases. He also spent two years as an assistant United States attorney for the southern district of New York. While in private practice in New York, he taught part-time at New York University School of Law. Berch is a professor at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University (ASU) and an honors disciplinary faculty member of Barrett, the honors college at ASU.

Honors and Affiliations

Berch was the editor of the Columbia Law Review. He received the State Bar of Arizona’s President’s Award and the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law Council of 100 Distinguished Service Award in 2007. Berch is the founder and director of the Legal Process Institute at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.

Berch's publications include Introduction to Legal Method and Process, 4th Ed. (with Berch and Spritzer) (West Group, 2006); "A Defense Plea for Leniency at the Mitigation Hearing – State v. Raskolnikov" in 38 Arizona State Law Journal (2006); "We've Only Just Begun: The Impact of Remand Orders from Higher to Lower Courts on American Jurisprudence," in 36 Arizona State Law Journal (2004); and "Law Professor's Professionalism Creed" in 16 The Professional Lawyer (2005).
