How to Wipe (Format) a Drive on a Mac

Student Staff Faculty Alumni

***Before you format a hard drive, make a backup of all important files***

If you need assistance with making a backup of your files, feel free to come into our office at UC 117 and we can set you up.

This tutorial can be applied to external hard drives as well as internal hard drives.

To format your hard drive or external HD, begin by opening the Finder.  Select "Applications" from the left hand side of the Finder window.  Scroll down to "Utilities" and open the folder (double click or click arrow beside it).

Once the folder is open, select "Disk Utility".

When you open up Disk Utility, a window similar to this will open up.  Select your hard drive from the left panel of the window.  You will have the ability to scan the hard drive ("Verify") and repair it ("Repair").  If you want to format the hard drive, click on "Erase".

Select which format you want the hard drive to be in by selecting it from the drop down list.  Finalize the process by clicking "Erase".  ***Again, make sure you've made a backup of the files you need to keep before doing this***
