Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does ITS offer any training for using Exchange 2007?

A: Yes. ITS will offer on-site training for each college/department as they are migrated from Mirapoint to Exchange. Check out our Training Schedule for more details. ITS is also offering Introductory MS Outlook 2007 classes this summer. Click here to register today.

Q: When will I be able to access Exchange 2007?

A: The migration to Exchange is happening on a school by school basis. The first school to be migrated to Exchange will be the School of Business. A tentative migration timeline can be found here: Project Timeline.

Q: Is my e-mail address going to change?

A: No, your e-mail address will remain the same (e.g., username@SanDiego.edu).

Q: Is my e-mail password going to change?

A: Your e-mail password will now be the same as the password you use to log into your computer (your AD password). This means that your password will expire every 90 days. If you are a Mac user, you will not currently receive a notification that your password is about to expire, so we recommend that you set a recurring appointment in your calendar for every 12 weeks to remind yourself that you need to reset your password. You can change your password by:

  • Logging on to Outlook Web Access.
  • Click on the "Options" link in the top right-hand corner of the page.
  • Select "Change Password" from the list on the left-hand side of the page.
  • Enter your old password and then select a new password.

If your AD/e-mail password does expire and you need immedate assistance, the ITS Help Desk can be reached by phone 24 hours/day, 7 days/week at (619) 260-7900.

Q: Will all of the e-mail messages that I currently have be migrated?

A: In order to reduce the amount of time that it will take to migrate your e-mail to Exchange, we recommend that all e-mails prior to January 1, 2009 remain in your current e-mail system on your computer, as an archive. All of the e-mails currently in your Inbox (from after January 1, 2009), as well as all of your mail folders, will be migrated to Exchange.

Q: Will my address book (contacts) be migrated?

A: Yes, your contacts will be migrated. Contact migration is supported for Eudora, Mac Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, Webmail and Entourage.

Q: Will my calendar be migrated?

A: If you are currently using Outlook, Webmail or Entourage, we will be able to migrate your calendar to Exchange. We are unable to migrate calendars from Eudora, Mac Mail or Thunderbird.

Q: Once my e-mail has been migrated to Exchange, will I lose all access to my previous e-mail system?

A: You will still have access to your old e-mail messages (they will be stored as an archive on your computer in your old e-mail system), but you will be unable to send and/or receive e-mail from your old system.

Q: Is it possible to get my home Outlook client to connect without using a VPN connection (e.g., from home)?

A: Yes. The best way to access your e-mail from home is via Outlook Web Access: https://exchange.sandiego.edu.

You can also use Outlook Anywhere to connect to the Exchange server without using VPN. The only USD-specific setting that you need is the URL of the Exchange server to connect to (this is the same as the webmail URL: exchange.sandiego.edu).

Q: How will the spam filter work in Exchange?

A: The spam filter will work in the same way as your current e-mail system. Your e-mail is still behind the Junk Mail Manager (JMM). In addition to this, you also will have a local Junk E-mail folder in Exchange.

Q: I am a Mac user. Do I need to do anything special?

A: At this point in time, Mac users will not receive notification of when their AD/e-mail password is going to expire. For this reason, we highly recommend that you set a recurring appointment on your calendar for every 12 weeks to remind yourself to change your password.
