International Education Week, 2007: Calendar of Events

The purpose of these events is to promote the advantages of global competency which is dependent on quality education at the international level in order to be a productive citizen in our increasingly global community.

Throughout the Week...

Display in the UC:
International Education Week Photo Contest, showcasing photos taken from all over the globe, will be displayed.

Bookstore International Sale & Display:
The USD Bookstore will showcase international titles, dual language dictionaries, travel books and related items. Discounts may apply.

USD Dining Services:
The USD Dining facilities will each offer international specials throughout the week.

Monday, November 12

11:30 am-12:30 pm – Herbert L. Dupont, MD
"Emerging Infectious Diseases – Is the United States Becoming a Developing Country?"
Directed specifially toward the School of Nursing and Health Sciences graduate students, Dr. Dupont will discuss various answers to this question. (School of Nursing)

1:30 pm-2:30 pm – Herbert L. Dupont, MD
"Travel Medicine and Principles of Safe Travel"
Dr. Dupont will discuss his extensive international research on traveler's sickness as well as the medications he has developed for treatment. (SOLES Executive Classroom)

6:00 pm- 7:00 pm – Abubakr Jamai
"Play it again Uncle Sam: Morocco, Freedom of the Press and the USA"
Sponsored by the Political Science Department (IPJ Theatre)

Tuesday, November 13

7:30 am- 9:00 am – "Serving Your Country, Serving Your Global Community"  
This seminar present's USD's NROTC Commanding Officer, Captain Mark S. Woolley, professor in SOLES and retired Director of Command and Leadership Studies at the United States Army War College, Dr. Geoge Reed and current Marine Corps Captain Sean Carroll. 12:00 pm-2:00 pm – International Education Fair
A celebration of international opportunities offered through USD. Events include: live entertainment, presentation of international programs and organizations, student photo contest award announcement, international food and raffle. All students and faculty are welcome to attend. (Colachis Plaza in front of the Immaculata)

5:30 pm-6:45 pm – Inocencio Arias: Spanish Consul to US, Former Spanish Ambassador to UN
"The United Nations in the 21st Century: Are they meeting world expectations?"

Wednesday, November 14

12:00-2:00 pm – Comprehensive Internationalization Luncheon & Discussion
Sponsored by the Provost's office, the International Center and the Center for Educational Excellence, this discussion focuses on strategies for internationalizing the campus and the curriculum. Invitation required. (IPJ Conference Rooms C/D)

4:30 pm – International Poetry Night
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to read their original works or the works of others in any language. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. (French Parlour, Founders Hall)

9:00 pm – International Mass for Peace
Coordinated by University Ministry, International Programs, International Alumni & International Students. (Founders Chapel)

Thursday, November 15

12:30-1:30 pm – International Lecture and Lunch with Dr. Manuel Aguilar
Dr. Aguilar, professor of Art History both at California State University at Los Angeles and in USD's Guadalajara Summer Program, will discuss Aztec art and architecture in his lecture titled, "Myths of Stone: How politics and religion are intertwined in Aztec art and architecture. (Lecture in IPJ Conference Rooms A/B)

5:30 pm-6:45 pm – International Film by Visual Arts Professor John Halaka
"The Presence of Absence in the Ruins of Kafr Bir'im"
The International Education Week Committee is pleased to present the debut of Professor Halaka's documentary film, which through narrative and poetry, recalls the experiences of Palestinian youth who currently live in the Palestinian Disaspora.
