Do you have the desire to be a changemaker? Are you eager to learn from a leader of the fair trade movement who is a bonafide changemaker? If so, USD will be hosting two events focused on educating students about social change and pathways to inspire their potential as social changemakers.
The University of San Diego, which earned a national designation as an AshokaU Changemaker Campus last fall, will host Ashoka Fellow Paul Rice, president and CEO of Fair Trade USA, on Thursday, Feb. 23. Five days later, USD’s Changemaker Hub and Associated Students will co-host an event, the inaugural USD Changemaker Festival. This event is designed to help students connect with USD organizations that employ a changemaker philosophy and offer programs and projects with a social change approach. The event runs from 12-2:15 p.m. in front of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice.
Rice has a full day of appearances in San Diego and with USD officials on Thursday. He will start with a 9 a.m. visit and talk at the Bayside Community Center, located just up the hill from campus in Linda Vista, where USD students, staff, faculty and administrators have served the community for many years.
Rice’s first appearance on campus will be as part of a discussion and student workshop from 12:15-1:30 p.m. in the School for Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) Warren Auditorium. Rice (pictured, left) will discuss his life’s journey and how it brought him to his current work for social change in the fair trade field. A question-and-answer session with Rice will be facilitated by Erick Diaz, president of Students for Fair Trade and Sustainability and Catholic Relief Services campus ambassador, and University Ministry Associate Minister Elizabeth Coyle.
Rice will give a presentation to School of Business Administration Professor Patricia Marquez’s Global Entrepreneurship and Social Change class from 2:30-3:50 p.m. in Olin Hall 229. Later, he’ll attend a reception with USD Changemaker Hub members and then meet with USD’s Board of Trustees.
The USD Changemaker Festival on Feb. 28 starts at 12:15 in front of Maher Hall. The annual March of the Toreros, part of the Torero Program Board’s University of Diversity Week, will see the campus community walk in unity to the IPJ’s Garden of the Sky area. Upon arrival, participants can learn about joining the social change movement with opportunities for current students and post-graduate students. Fair Trade food booths, fun events and live music will be part of the festivities. There will be a table devoted to information about His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who will speak at USD on April 18 as part of a two-day visit to San Diego.
