Center Provides Many Ways to Enjoy Great Outdoors

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Adventure-photo1One major benefit of Mark Ceder’s work is seeing others enjoy what he helps put together.

“For me, having an active lifestyle is a major contributor to wellness,” said Ceder, the outdoor coordinator for the University of San Diego’s Experiential Learning and Adventure Center. “I want to help people experience the outdoors, one of the best things that San Diego has to offer.”

The center, located on the Hahn University Center’s ground floor (Room 136), is doing its part to encourage more members of the USD community and beyond to try their hand at a new activity this summer or just rekindle interest in an active sport. The center offers a wide range of outdoor equipment available for rent and special summer offers to encourage faculty, staff and summer students to participate.

This month, for instance, all surfboard rentals come with a complimentary wetsuit. Faculty and staff can rent one item and get a second item rent free from June 15-28. Everyone can rent two kayaks for the price of one during that same time frame. From July 1-15, USD summer students can rent one item and get a second item for free. There’s even a summer-only offer available to those with a USD identification card: Spend $20, $50 or $100 and it becomes a $30, $75 or $150 equipment rental certificate, respectively. Certificates must be purchased by June 16 and must be used by Aug. 16, 2010.

There are several summer excursions planned through the center for people of all skill levels. Both USD and non-USD participants can learn to kayak, take morning surf lessons, or go rock climbing. There’s even a family canoe trip that includes fireworks. Each of these events, aside from rock climbing, are $20 for USD-affiliated participants and slightly higher for the general public (typically $25). Rock climbing trip is $35 for USD, $45 for general public.

Another popular activity is the chance to canoe to a location that allows people to enjoy a unique summer concert experience at Humphrey’s in Shelter Island while on the water. The center’s scheduled summer canoe and concert events, which are $20 per person, are for Diana Ross (June 11), Colbie Caillat (July 6), Jim Gaffagin (July 16), Jackson Browne (July 21), Ringo Starr and his All-Star Band (Aug. 6) and Creedence Clearwater Revisited (Aug. 12).

As the summer winds down, the center has a great way for new USD students to kick off the 2010 school year. The center offers an outdoor orientation adventure trip Aug. 25-27. The $165 cost (register online) covers all group camping equipment, three different adventure activities including lake kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, mud caving and a trip to nearby Julian and a t-shirt. The adventure gives new USD students a chance to do team building, meet USD staff and upperclassmen student leaders and meet new friends. Those taking advantage of this opportunity can move into their residence hall early for an additional $32.
