The University of San Diego hosted its final spring session for the American Indian Recruitment (AIR) program’s “AIR Sr.” after-school program for local American Indian high school students on April 12.
Students from USD Ethnic Studies professor Michelle Jacob’s Race and Education (ETHN 494) class collaborated with “AIR Sr.” students (pictured, at right) on projects ranging from living a healthy lifestyle, saying no to drugs, eating healthy and physical activity. The respective group presentations were given during the program.
In addition to the presentations, Anthony Lieras, a USD Admissions counselor, spoke to the high school students about the importance of higher education and provided them with information about USD; a celebration dinner was held at the Student Life Pavilion; and an awards ceremony was held for students and mentors. John Hood, an AIR Sr. parent, concluded the event with a special, traditional prayer.
The Department of Ethnic Studies, USD Admissions, Community Service-Learning, Center for Awareness, Service and Action and the United Front Multicultural Center sponsored the event and the program.
