Purpose

The Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CID) was established to advise on issues, policies, and practices that affect the University of San Diego's commitment to inclusion and diversity. Our purpose is to promote awareness and discussion to form collaborative relationships across campus through forums, events and initiatives.

The CID formally opened its doors on September 1, 2010. Our presence signals the University of San Diego's commitment to living the practices that reflect what it means to be inclusive and diverse. It is our hope to build the kinds of relationships that help provide a safe, creative, respectful, and educational place for all who attend, work for, or visit the University of San Diego.

Mission

The Center for Inclusion and Diversity's mission is to provide the resources and research necessary to recruit, retain and sustain a diverse and inclusive university.

Goals

The goals of the center are to: encourage research, enhance education, create dialogue, seek resources, provide assistance, improve retention, and enhance recruitment. The CID has four primary areas of focus: research, resources, recruitment, and retention.

Vision

We seek to create an inclusive university where diversity, which is evident in humanity, is justly represented, respected, and recognized, and where cultural capital is provided to counteract the historic and current barriers that can hinder success.

History

President Mary E. Lyons, PhD, established the center based on the recommendation of the President's Advisory Board on Inclusion and Diversity (PABID). PABID asked that a center be created to enhance recruitment, integration, retention and graduation of underrepresented students, faculty and staff to advance the university's mission as a Roman Catholic institution, which is "committed to advancing academic excellence, expanding liberal and professional knowledge, creating a diverse and inclusive community and preparing leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service."
