Susannah Stern, Ph.D. Spring 2009 Courses: COMM 130 - Introduction to Media Studies COMM 366 - Interpretive Research Methods Office Hours: Mon./Wed.: 1:30 - 4:00 p.m.; and by appointment. Susannah Stern (Ph.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) joined the Department of Communication Studies in 2004, after teaching at Boston College for four years. Dr. Stern's research is situated at the intersection of electronic media and youth culture. She focuses on how young people experience the mediated world, how they use media to navigate through adolescence, and how they construct media messages to meet their own needs and fantasies. She is particularly interested in the Internet as a unique space for cultural production, youth communication, self-publication, sub-culture connection, and identity exploration. Dr. Stern's work has appeared in a variety of peer-reviewed journals and edited collections, and she is regularly interviewed by the popular press about adolescents' Internet use. Dr. Stern’s teaching interests include pop culture, new media, gender, and children/adolescents, and she teaches a variety of media-related courses at USD, including Intro. to Media Studies, Media Processes & Effects, and Communication Investigations. |
