Carole L. Huston, a full professor in Communication Studies, joined the Department at the University of San Diego in August 1989. She earned her doctoral degree in Speech Communication at the University of Washington in 1990. She is also the current director of the Center for Learning and Teaching, an umbrella organization working to integrate faculty development with innovative learner-centered contexts and curricular objectives at USD. Dr. Huston has authored several papers and publications in interpesonal communication, organizational communication, rhetorical criticism, and research methods. Dr. Huston developed and team-taught a course in USD's School of Business. She has also worked as a consultant and workshop provider for damily business organizations. Additionally, Dr. Huston has worked with members of USD's Family Forum, a community outreach program for family-owned business. She served as co-director of the Gender Studies Program from September, 2001 through May, 2005, with Dr. Evelyn Kirkley in the Theology and Religious Studies Department. In the Department of Communication Studies, she teaches courses in interpersonal communcation theory, intercultural communication, quantitative research methods, and interpretive research methods. She has also taught lower and upper division courses in communication theory, small group communication, and a senior seminar in gender studies. She frequently supervises independent studies with students interested in pusuing individual research projects. From 1996 until 2000, she served as the deaprtment chair. She has also served as a member of USD's Internal Review Board for ethical conduct in research, and is a current member of the Women's Center Advisory Board. She has offered campus workshops in gender, ethics, and research methods.
