Classical studies is the oldest branch of the humanities, focusing on the cultures and languages of Greece and Rome and the history of the lands surrounding the Mediterranean in ancient times, including the rise and fall of some of history's most famous empires, the development of democracy and political philosophy and the birth of all three major Abrahamic religions.
