Fall '08 Prep Workshop
Clickers

Wednesday, May 28
12:00 - 2:30 pm
MHR Hall Room 145

What are clickers? Student Response Systems (SRS), commonly referred to as "clickers," are small, hand-held devices, similar to television remote controls. In the classroom, they are used by students to answer questions posed by the professor. Answers are immediately projected onto the screen, providing quick, anonymous feedback that can be shown in a variety of graphical formats providing a basis for class interaction and can be used as a measure for student understanding of subject matter.

Faculty planning to use USD's newly standardized clicker systems (CPS by eInstruction) in their Fall '08 classes are strongly encouraged to attend this session. It is the one big training and overview workshop to be offered in preparation for Fall semester.

Why so early, since Fall is months away? As with any new technology, it takes time to master and understand the system, develop materials, and get familiar with using it successfully on the fly. This will provide you with foundational information and assist you in developing your materials over the summer. Having access to colleagues who have used this technology should also prove valuable in ensuring that questions are answered and concerns addressed.

Join colleague Eric Page who has successfully implemented clicker technology into his Physics classes as he discusses his experience with this technology. He will discuss his reasons for bringing this technology to his students, tips and pointers for others who are interested in getting started, and why his students find this brings value to their learning.

John Burgess, eInstruction representative, will also be on hand to do a product demonstration and help interested users to get up and running during our hands-on portion of the afternoon.

CEE representative, Amanda Ryan will discuss recent studies on some of the pedagogical benefits that clickers can offer and considerations for adopting this technology into your course design.

We encourage you to bring a laptop computer and a flash drive (memory stick) to this session as you will have the opportunity to create your question database and get started using this technology in the hands-on portion of the afternoon. We will have some laptops available as well for those of you who choose just to bring a flash drive. On your Flash drive it might be a good idea to have a Word document with a short (5-question) quiz containing multiple choice, true/false questions so that you can actually create a quiz using the CPS software.
