Eren Branch joined USD in 1985 after working as an information officer at the Fulbright Commission in Stockholm. At USD, she served as Associate Dean and then Dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Education, joining the English Department full-time in 1997. She taught courses on Dante’s Divine Comedy and on twentieth-century Italian literature, as well as on Italian American literature, modern reinventions of classical myth, and on opera and literature. In recent years, she served as Chair of the English Department and then as Interim Chair of the Sociology Department. In 2009, Eren Branch was the inaugural winner of the Drinan Award for Distinguished Service.

Sister Helen McHugh

Professor Emerita, English

Religious of the Sacred Heart Helen McHugh spent much of four decades at the University of San Diego. Sister McHugh first arrived at the San Diego College for Women in 1965 as a professor of English. Over the next 27 years, she served as the chair of both the English department and the fine arts department. Named professor emerita in 1988, she continued to direct a tutoring program and conduct research until she went to Oakwood Retirement Center, the Society of the Sacred Heart’s elder care center in Atheron, California, in 2003.  Sister McHugh passed away on December 30, 2011, at Oakwood.

Mary Quinn

Mary Quinn, PhD

Professor Emerita, English

Mary A. Quinn was a member of the faculty begininning in 1984. She was a Professor of English. In the English Department, Professor Quinn offered undergraduate courses on Romanticism, poetry and the visual arts, mindfulness in literature, and the short story. Her research focused on poetry and the visual arts. Professor Quinn served as director of the Honors Program and coordinator of the Writing Center.  She twice delivered the Freshman Convocation address. She received an Outstanding Preceptor Award in 2007.

Sister Elizabeth  Walsh

Sister Elizabeth Walsh

Sister Elizabeth Walsh came to the University of San Diego in 1975  having received her PhD from Harvard University in 1973.  Her area of concentration was medieval literature, and at USD she taught a variety of medieval courses including Chaucer and Dante. She was active in scholarly circles and gave many presentations at different conferences.  Her most recent work is an article on “Images of the Dormition of Mary: East and West” (2007).  She continues her scholarly studies and still teaches an occasional course at USD.
