Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Preparing the world's next scientists

Recognized by the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry proudly prepares students to be the world's next chemists, biochemists, bioengineers and educators.

What chemistry and biochemistry students learn

With a required 100 hours of undergraduate research guided by faculty advisors, students gain critical, hands-on learning with sophisticated instrumentation and computer equipment. These strong faculty-student relationships provide students with effective advising and career counseling, opportunities to co-publish and recommendations for medical and graduate schools.

fundamental chemical concepts

experimental approaches to solving problems of a chemical nature

written and oral communication skills for conversing on a chemical nature

discovery and validation of new knowledge via research projects

application of the discipline to analyze, interpret and communicate results of laboratory experiments and research

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry occupies 27,000 sq. ft. of the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology, built in 2003.
