2014 Summer Youth and Adult Swim Lessons & Programs

Youth Program Description & Fees

Youth Learn to Swim

Our summer aquatic schedule includes four two-week sessions running from June – August. Lessons are Monday through Thursday of each week and for 30-mins each lesson. Certified American Red Cross instructors teach swim lessons. At USD, we maintain small class sizes to maximize the attention each student will receive. This year, we will be offering a wide range of aquatic classes to meet most age levels, including; Parent - Tot classes (18 months – 3 years old); Pre-K (3 – 4 years old) and Learn to Swim youth lessons (5 – 16 years old). We are also offering a few select private and semi-private classes. Please note that space is very limited for these classes and it is first come, first served. You must call to register for the semi-private or private classes and we will NOT mix and match children for the semi-private class (e.g. both kids should know each other and be at about the same level). *Please see below for a full schedule as well as class descriptions.

  • Group classes are $80 per child per two week session
  • Private and semi-private classes are for one week (4-days) and are $70 per child for semi-private or $120 per child for a private.

This summer, we are very excited to offer a unique specialty aquatic class:

  • Spring Board Diving: Designed for the advanced swimmer who is looking to have a little fun on the spring boards in a fun and safe manner, this class will review basic as well as advanced dives including one-part take off, two-part take off, tuck position, pike position and varied standing dives. An instructor who is currently on the USD Dive Team will teach this class. Class is offered at 4pm on selected sessions and is $60 per child per session. Prerequisites: must be comfortable in deep end and be at least a Learn to Swim 3 level.

Youth Specialty Programs (Learn Karate, Learn to Play Tennis, Learn to Dance)

This summer, we invite your child to explore different sport and activity classes right here at USD! Let our experienced and amazing instructors help build social skills, skill development, and self-confidence! Our youth specialty classes are each two-weeks long (Monday - Thursday only) and $60 per child per session. This summer we are offering 3 different youth classes including:

  1. Learn Karate: Every child can benefit from studying martial arts. The study of karate brings more than just physical rewards; students also develop discipline, focus, respect for others and goal-setting skills. The emphasis on personal achievement also builds confidence: success is within the reach of every student. Unlike team sports, there are no “benchwarmers” in karate classes. Instead, children learn techniques at their own pace. Open to children ages 6-10 years old. This class is offered at 11am on selected sessions only. Sign up for Karate AND the 12:15pm group swim class and save!
  2. Learn to Dance: Students in our Learn to Dance class will explore the universal elements of dance (Body, Energy, Space, Time) learning simple dance combinations and creating dances through beginning choreography. Students will work with the instructor, on their own and with each other. Beginning dance skills in Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Ballroom and even Zumba may be tought. Open to children ages 5-9 years old. This class is offered at 11am on selected sessions only. Sign up for Dance AND the 12:15pm group swim class and save!
  3. Learn to Play Tennis: Introduce tennis to your child with our fun and exciting approach! In our Learn to Play Tennis class, your up-and-coming tennis player discovers the equipment and map to the tennis court. They develop hand-eye coordination along with movement skills. Basic tennis fundamentals are taught through lots of tennis-like games! Open to children ages 6-10 years old. This class is offered at 11am on selected sessions only. Sign up for Tennis AND the 12:15pm group swim class and save!

Class Descriptions

Parent - Tot

The parent - tot class is a fun and unique class designed to give lessons to both parent and child! The instructor will provide guidance and demonstrations but the parent will be the main instructor (with the instructor present of course) in the water! Skills learned include intro to water safety, becoming comfortable in the water, basic skill development such as blowing bubbles, submerging faces, front/back float, kicking and gliding. All or most skills are done with the support of the parent.

Pre-K 1

These classes are designed to get younger children ages 3 to 4 years comfortable in the water and swimming! Most skills are taught with the support of the instructor until the child becomes comfortable in the water alone. Skills range from submerging faces and floating and gliding, to learning basic leg and arm actions that will eventually develop into stroke techniques. 3 children max capacity.

Pre-K 2

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Pre-K 1 or equivalent skills. This class is a continuation of the skills learned in Pre-K 1 and designed for tots ages 3 to 4 years. The instructor will continue to develop water safety skills, basic stroke development movements with arms and legs, floating and gliding, and fully submerge entire body under water. Children will be expected to perform the skills with and without the support of the instructor. 4 children max capacity.

Learn to Swim 1

This class is ideal for children who are 5 or older who still may be uncomfortable in the water or just learning to swim. They will learn to hold their breath, float, glide, and work on basic movement through the water (leg and arm action to form beginning stroke development skills). Most skills are done with assistance from the instructor. Students should be able to hold onto the wall for the duration of the lesson (30 minutes). 5 to 6 children max capacity.

Learn to Swim 2

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Learn to Swim 1 or equivalent skills - students should be able to swim 5 yards, unassisted, on both their stomach and back and should be comfortable in deep water (up to 5 feet). In this class, children will begin to learn new strokes, be expected to swim farther on their own, and tread water, combine arm and leg actions on front and back, and finning. 6 children max capacity.

Learn to Swim 3

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Learn to Swim 2 or equivalent skills - students should be able to (unassisted) swim across the deep end on their stomach and back and retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool. In this class, students will learn the elementary backstroke, flutter kick in streamline position, dolphin & scissor kick, the survival float and both sitting and kneeling dives. 7 children max capacity.

Learn to Swim 4

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Learn to Swim 3 or equivalent skills - students should be able to swim 25 yards (the length of the pool) freestyle and backstroke, tread water for up to one-minute, and do a sitting and kneeling dive. Further development of the backstroke, side stroke, different kicks, front/back crawl, as well as intro to the butterfly, streamline positioning and compact dives will be taught in this class. 8 children max capacity.

Learn to Swim 5

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Learn to Swim 4 or equivalent skills - students should be able to swim at least 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke and at least 10 yards of side stroke, breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke, and dolphin kick. In this class stroke technique/refinement and endurance along with flip turns, shallow-angel and tuck and pike surface dives, and sculling. 10 children max.

Learn to Swim 6

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Learn to Swim 5 or equivalent skills - students should be able to do all swim strokes (freestyle, back, butterfly, side and breast), swim at least 100 yards continuously, and tread water for at least 3 minutes. Endurance and stroke refinement as well as fitness techniques (with props such as fins, paddles, pull buoys and boards), flip turns from front and back positioning, circle swimming and how to use a pace clock will be worked in this course. By the end, students should be able to swim 500 yards continuously. 10 children max.

Private or Semi-Private Swim Lessons:

Private (one child-one instructor) or semi-private (two-children-one instructor) are designed to further advance your child's swimming skills. We can accommodate any level (ages 3 to 14). For semi-private classes, you must register the pair of children together- we will not place children together so please try to find another child at the same level before you register. Please note that is not beneficial to place two children together who are at different levels as the instructor will not be able to dedicate as much time per child as he/she would be able to if the children were at the same level.

Release of Liability Waiver, Refunds and Rescheduling:

  • Release of Liability Waiver:
    • Each participant/user must sign a Release of Liability waiver prior to participating in any Recreation Department class or using the facility. The waiver may be obtained by clicking HERE. Please bring the waiver to the first class. All minors must have parent/guardian signature on the waiver.
  • Cancellation Policy:
    • After we receive a confirmed payment, a cancellation fee of $40.00 will be charged if you must cancel your class. We will not issue any refund (even pro-rated amount) if you cancel within 24-hours of your class start date or on or after your class start date.
  • Rescheduling Policy:
    • The Campus Recreation department will do its best to accommodate change of class requests. However, the department cannot guarantee the availability of class times as many of our classes fill up early. If after the first class you feel that your child is in the wrong class, we will do our best to place that child in the correct class, depending on space capacities.
