2013 Summer Youth and Adult Swim Lessons & Programs

The 2013 schedule is now posted (see below). Registration will open up either late April or early May.

Youth Swim Lesson Program Description

Our summer aquatic schedule includes four two-week sessions running from June – August. Lessons are Monday through Thursday of each week (except session 2 due to the holiday schedule). Certified American Red Cross instructors teach swim lessons. At USD, we maintain small class sizes to maximize the attention each student will receive. This year, we will be offering a wide range of aquatic classes to meet all age levels, including tot swim lessons (3 – 5 years old) and youth swim lessons (5 – 14 years old). We are also offering a few select private and semi-private classes (*space is very limited for these classes and it is first come, first serve. You must call to register for the semi-private or private classes). We are also adding a youth swim conditioning class designed for experienced swimmers who want to explore the beginnings of competitive swim, but in a friendly and non-competitive way. Classes are $80 per child per session (private and semi-private classes are for one week (4-days) and are $70 or $120). Special discounts ($10 off) apply if you register your child for a swim class and a youth specialty class in the same session.

*Please scroll down to see 2013 schedule in table format.

Session Dates:

  1. June 17 - 27
  2. July 1 - 12 (skip 7/4 and make up offered Friday 7/12)
  3. July 15 - 25
  4. July 29 - August 8

Class Descriptions

Tot 1-4

These classes are designed to get younger children (ages 3 to 5) comfortable in the water and swimming! Most skills are taught with the support of the instructor until the child becomes comfortable in the water alone. Skills range from submerging faces and floating (tot 1/2) to learning basic strokes (tot 3/4).

Beginner

This class is ideal for children over the age of 5 who still may be uncomfortable in the water or just learning to swim. They will learn to hold their breath, float, glide, and work on basic movement through the water. Most skills are done with assistance from the instructor. Students should be able to hold onto the wall for the duration of the lesson (30 minutes).

Advanced Beginner

Pre-Requisite: Students should be able to swim 5 yards, unassisted, on both their stomach and back and should be comfortable in deep water. In this class, children will begin to learn new strokes, be expected to swim farther, and learn to dive (kneeling) from the edge of the pool.

Intermediate

Pre-Requisite: Children should be able to swim across the deep end on their stomach and back, do a kneeling dive, and retrieve objects unassisted from the bottom of the pool. In the intermediate class, students will learn to tread water, scull, dive standing, and the scissor kick.

Swimmer

Pre-Requisite: Must be able to swim 25 yards (the length of the pool), freestyle and backstroke, tread water for two minutes, and do a standing dive. Breaststroke, sidestroke, dolphin kick, and different dives will be taught during this class.

Advanced Swimmer

Pre-Requisite: Must be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle and backstroke and at least 10 yards of sidestroke, breaststroke, and dolphin kick. Stroke technique and endurance along with flip turns, spring board dives, and butterfly will be taught in this class.

Advanced Skills

Pre-Requisite: Students should be able to do all swim strokes (free stlye, back, butterfly, and breast), swim at least 100 yards continuously, and tread water for 3 minutes. Endurance and stroke refinement will be worked in this course. By the end, students should be able to swim 500 yards continuously.

Youth Swim Conditioning

Pre-Requisite: Students should be able to do all swim strokes (free style, back, butterfly, and breast), swim at least 500 yards continuously, and tread water for 3 minutes. This class is designed to introduce students to the world of competitive swim but in a non-competitive way to start. Endurance development and stroke refinement will be worked in this course.

Private or Semi-Private Swim Lessons:

Private (one child-one instructor) or semi-private (two-children-one instructor) are designed to further advance your child's swimming skills. We can accommodate any level (ages 3 to 14). For semi-private classes, you must register the pair of children together- we will not place children together so please try to find another child at the same level before you register. Please note that is not beneficial to place two children together who are at different levels as the instructor will not be able to dedicate as much time per child as he/she would be able to if the children were at the same level.
