Mission Bay Aquatic Center Classes

USD Water Sports classes are run through the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, which is the world's largest instructional waterfront facility.

Sign-Up Process and Class Info

  • The Mission Bay Aquatic Center is located at 1001 Santa Clara Place in Mission Beach, about one mile north of the Belmont Park Roller Coaster.
  • You will need to provide your own transportation to the Aquatic Center. Transportation is NOT provided to any off-campus recreation class.
  • For-credit option: Sign up through the registrar or with your MySanDiego student registration portal for a class. Times are NOT listed in our course listing as you need to pick a time from the MBAC catalogue.
  • Check the Mission Bay Aquatic Center web site or brochure located at the Campus Recreation office and the lobby of the University Center for exact dates, times, and fees for classes offered.
  • You design your own schedule- most classes have multiple session offerings you can sign up for. You can check out the MBAC website or brochure for specific dates/times but it is up to you to pick a class date and time.
  • It is recommended you sign up early to ensure your enrollment in class.
  • To reserve your class time AFTER you register, call (858) 488-1036 and tell them you are signed up for a credit class from USD.
  • You will be required to pay your fee at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center.

Sea Kayaking

Learn to paddle a Sea or Whitewater Kayak, Surfski, or Waveski on the waters of Mission Bay. A great way to prepare for longer trips off campus. *Note: for-credit registration: register with your portal THEN register and pay for your desired section with the MBAC Transportation is not provided to any MBAC off-campus class.

Sailing

Five different types of sailboats are used in the four main sailing classes offered by the Aquatic Center. The sailing program will give you the confidence to sail alone or the ability to host your friends to an afternoon on the water. *Note: for-credit registration: register with your portal THEN register and pay for your desired section with the MBAC Transportation is not provided to any MBAC off-campus class.

Stand Up Paddling

NEW class coming Fall 2012: Stand up paddling has emerged as an easy and exciting way to combine a strong core workout with the enjoyment of being out on the water. Learn the fundamentals of stand up paddling including etiquette, safety, equipment, and technique. Then, set off on Mission Bay to put your new skills to the test and to enjoy the ocean breeze! Surfing

Enjoy California's most exciting sport. Intended to give a beginner a safe and structured introduction to surfing. Classes include lectures on the mechanics of beach and waves, surfboard handling and the techniques necessary to stand and ride a wave. Surfboards are provided, wetsuits are available at one dollar per class. *Note: for-credit registration: register with your portal THEN register and pay for your desired section with the MBAC Transportation is not provided to any MBAC off-campus class.

Waterskiing

Waterskiing at MBAC is both instructional and recreational. Dry land ski school is coupled with one on one interaction between the boat driver and skier to start a novice skiing on double skis as well as expert coaching to accomplished slalom skiers. Three ski runs per class is average. Windsurfing

Learn windsurfing in a safe and successful manner on Mission Bay. The course is offered as a basic introduction. The Aquatic Center has over 50 boards and four different types of sail sizes to give the variety of equipment needed to learn and improve. *Note: for-credit registration: register with your portal THEN register and pay for your desired section with the MBAC Transportation is not provided to any MBAC off-campus class.
