As the Steven L. Black Endowed Chair in Real Estate, Charles Tu, PhD, oversees the real estate program at the University of San Diego’s Knauss School of Business. Tu was instrumental in launching the real estate major in 2009 and has served as the academic director of the Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) program since 2010. In addition to teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses at USD, he actively engages in education programs for professional organizations such as the Urban Land Institute, NAIOP, and the Appraisal Institute.

Before joining USD in 2004, Tu taught at George Washington University and Cal State Fullerton. His applied research focuses on improving real estate and business decision-making and covers a wide range of topics, including real estate investment trusts (REITs), commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), single-family and multifamily housing, smart growth and new urbanism, and retail shopping centers. He has been published in leading academic journals, with findings cited in major newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Tu holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from National Chao-Tung University in Taiwan and an MBA and PhD in finance from George Washington University. Additionally, he holds professional designations such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), LEED AP, and certifications in ARGUS Enterprise and ARGUS Developer.
