During the past year, the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate has become increasingly committed to exploring the financial implications, barriers and solutions to green and sustainable real estate development.

To date, the Center’s green initiatives include:

* On Oct. 30, 2007, the Center hosted its first sustainable development conference, “Is It Easy Being Green?,” along with the city of San Diego, the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation and CleanTECH San Diego. The conference was attended by more than 200 industry and civic leaders and featured San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders as the keynote speaker. *The Burnham-Moores Center and the CoStar Group recently released the first systematic study addressing the benefits of investments in green buildings through a study of 435 Energy Star-labeled buildings and 2,871 non-Energy Star buildings across the country. Norm Miller, professor and director of academic programs at the Burnham-Moores Center was a co-author. Among other significant findings, the ground-breaking study revealed that Energy Star-rated buildings have higher occupancy rates and lower operating expenses than non-Energy Star buildings. *The Burnham-Moores Center has been serving as a research partner on The Chula Vista Research Project, which is focused on energy-efficient community development in California. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission and conducted by the National Energy Center for Sustainable Communities, the San Diego State University Research Foundation, the Gas Technology Institute, Colorado Energy Group, San Diego Gas & Electric, and the city of Chula Vista.

*The Burnham-Moores Center is playing a key role in the launching of a new real estate monograph on green buildings and sustainable real estate. Norm Miller, the Center’s director of academic programs, will serve as co-editor of the monograph, which will be published under the auspices of the American Real Estate Society, with funding by the CoStar Group. If the monograph is well received, it could evolve into the Journal of Sustainable Real Estate. The Journal of Sustainable Real Estate will be the first publication in North America to focus on sustainable real estate and one of the first in the world. Click here to view the Call for Papers.

*In Sept. 2008, the Burnham-Moores Center launched its second Continuing Education program: the Certificate in Land Use and Sustainable Community Development. The Certificate in Land Use and Sustainable Community Development is a comprehensive program for today’s professional interested in better understanding the mandated, complex and time-consuming processes that are involved in every land use decision.
