Some important things to remember when starting a club:

Advisors

All student clubs and organizations need a faculty or staff advisor. Finding an advisor can sometimes be daunting, but don’t panic – there are many professors/staff members on campus that are more than willing to help students mobilize and form on-campus organizations. A good place to start is by asking a preceptor, academic advisor or favorite professor. Sometimes these people might be too busy with teaching or research to take on the responsibility themselves, but they can often recommend someone who can help. Every advisor is different – some are very hands on and involved with the organization and others tend to be hands off. It is important when seeking an advisor that you clearly discuss what role the advisor will/should serve in the new organization. If you are having difficulty finding an advisor, e-mail the Vice President of Student Organizations for help!

Members

To be recognized as a club and approved by the senate you must have at least ten (10) members. You do not need this to fill out the form above, but before your club can be approved by the senate you need to have ten members. Finding members is easier than you might think. Friends will often have the same interests as you – talk to them, Facebook groups can bring like-minded people together and after filling out the new club registration form you can begin to advertise and market your club on-campus, so get started now!

Constitution

Like the member requirement, clubs and organizations must make a constitution that outlines the mission, function and by-laws. Writing a constitution might seem like a lot of work, but it can be very fun and easy! Having a constitution also helps clubs internally by establishing order and regularity for the members and leaders. For help writing your constitution, click the link!
