USD Wins WCC Commissioner’s Cup for First Time

Director of USD Athletics, Ky Snyder

The smile on the face of Ky Snyder, the University of San Diego’s Director of Athletics, said it all on the afternoon of Friday, May 23.

In a year in which USD’s sports teams won three West Coast Conference titles, two WCC Basketball Tournament titles and several programs placed among the top three in their respective sports, Snyder collected the Toreros’ biggest prize of the season.

The WCC’s Commissioner’s Cup, a trophy that goes to the school with the top performing athletics program in the eight-team conference, is now in USD’s possession. It is the first time USD has claimed this honor in the Cup’s seven-year history.

“The West Coast Conference is proud to present the University of San Diego with the 2008 Commissioner’s Cup,” WCC Commissioner Michael Gilleran said in a statement. “Earning this award is a direct result of San Diego’s dedication to building a successful broad-based intercollegiate athletics program. The student-athletes, alumni, staff and administration at USD should take great pride in winning this award.”

The Toreros won the Cup with 71 points. Santa Clara was the runner-up, Pepperdine was third, followed in order by Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, Portland and, finally, Gonzaga.

Snyder’s motto when he became Athletic Director four years ago, has been for USD teams to win conference championships without sacrificing academic integrity.

Upon accepting the silver trophy from associate commissioner Wendy Guthrie, Snyder said USD winning the Cup this year “is the first step. We’ve talked about doing this on a regular basis.”

School of Business Administration

Incoming Dean of the School of Business,
David Pyke

New Dean Begins Work on July 1
The School of Business Administration is excited to welcome new dean, David Pyke, on July 1. Pyke comes to USD from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College where he served as the associate dean of their top-ranked MBA Program.

During his interview process and his frequent visits back to USD, Pyke has been impressed with the aspect that the university prides itself on. "A lot of schools give lip service to personalized service and being student-centric, but I was struck by how the school really takes that to heart and backs it up by ensuring that students will be in small classes and have a more intimate learning experience," said Pyke.

Look for more news on David Pyke’s arrival in upcoming newsletters.

Law Professor’s Porsche Finds New Home With Former Student
It’s not every day that an alumnus receives a Porsche from a former law professor, but in November 2007, Donald Mayes, ’96, received just that from the late Professor Frank A. Engfelt’s family.

Longtime USD law school faculty member Professor Frank A. Engfelt passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2007, after a lengthy illness. Professor Engfelt taught at the law school from 1963 to 2004. Upon his passing, the law school received a flood of emails from alumni sharing their fond memories of him.

Donald’s friend, classmate and law alumni association board member Marty B. Lorenzo, '96, wrote, "Every year at the Women's Law Caucus fundraising auction, one of the most popular items was a ride in Professor Engfelt's red 1970 Porsche 911S.”

Donald Mayes '96 (JD)

Donald remembered, “My first year contracts course was with Frank Engfelt. I liked him so much that I took every class that he taught while I was at USD law school. Professor Engfelt told us that he called his Porsche ‘Hester’ because it was a red ‘S’ and it reminded him of the character Hester Prynne from Nathanial Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter,” Donald continued.

Every year, Professor Engfelt would donate a ride with him and Hester to lunch as an item in the annual Women’s Law Caucus fundraising auction. “It was never a matter of ‘if’ I was going on that trip with Professor Engfelt and Hester, it was just a matter of ‘how much’ it was going to cost me,” Donald reported.
