Blain WatsonBlain Watson '02

Recent USD Graduate

Blain Watson, class of 2002, is a San Diego native who came to USD through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). Blain is double majoring in Communication Studies and Spanish. He was able to practice both skills when he studied abroad in Madrid, Spain. When he's not studying, giving tours of the campus or attending a Black Student Union meeting, Blain enjoys Salsa Dancing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Why did you decide to Study Abroad? And why Spain?

I really wanted to see the rest of the world, to witness different cultures. My great-grandfather was from Spain and I had a lot of Spanish language experience, so Spain was a great choice for me. Studying abroad was a wonderful experience. I saw a lot, did a lot and grew up a lot. I grew intellectually and now appreciate life a lot more.

How has EOP affected your time at USD?

EOP didn't just provide academic support, but also support emotionally. It helps you to grow. Motivation is the basis of the program and Mike Austin, the program director, is really concerned with student progress. He motivated me and pushed me to work harder than I though I could.

Why USD? Why stay in San Diego?

When I graduated from high school I knew I wasn't ready to leave home yet. I'm part of a Latin family and family is very important. I'm really close to the members of my immediate family and I didn't want to go to far. San Diego is a great place to live, and I already know so many people. I chose USD because of the liberal arts education it provides. I'm outspoken and I want to learn about different people and cultures. Coming from a big high school, I wanted the small school size USD offers. I like the attention. I like to stand out!

What do you see in your future?

I would really like to teach because I like kids. I think eventually I would like to and education administrator, but first I want to teach to gain perspective. Someday I want to be the president of a university.
