Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find out what workshops are currently being offered?
There are three ways to find out what workshops are being offered:

  • The Training & Development calendar is available on the website at www.sandiego.edu/hr/training.  You can see what workshops are being offered, when they are scheduled and the location.
  • In addition to the calendar, an e-mail is sent out each month to the campus community to inform employees about the current month’s training sessions.
  • You can also view the training calendar and workshop descriptions on the bulletin board outside of the Human Resources office in Maher Hall, Room 1010.

Can we have private training just for our office/department?
Yes, we are happy to work with a department or work team to facilitate training according to your specific needs.  A supervisor can choose to have a pre-designed training offered to their staff as a private group session or they can work with the Training & Development staff to determine what objectives they would like employees to meet and developing a training session to specifically meet these objectives.  Contact Karen Kitchen to set up a meeting if you are interested in this option (ext. 2764 or karenkitchen@sandiego.edu).

How can I find out what information will be covered in a specific workshop?
Workshop descriptions are available for all sessions offered.  You can view these descriptions on the Training & Development website at www.sandiego.edu/hr/training or on the bulletin board outside of the Human Resources office in Maher 101.

Is there a cost to attend the workshops listed on the Training & Development Calendar?
Training opportunities offered at USD are a benefit to employees with no cost attached unless otherwise noted on the workshop description.  These sessions are a free to faculty, administrators and staff.

Do I need to register for a workshop in advance?  How do I register?
Knowing how many employees to expect will insure that we have a large enough room and adequate materials.  We do request that employees use one of the following ways to register. Online at http://www.sandiego.edu/hr/register. E-mail usdtraining@sandiego.edu or call the Training Registration Line at ext. 6619. This will allow us to adequately prepare for your attendance and communicate with you about the session.

How are the topics of workshops chosen?
Feedback from employees and supervisors are a significant factor when determining what training opportunities to offer.  Our goal is to support USD employees in their roles, so if you have a suggestion for a workshop or other learning opportunity, please let us know at usdtraining@sandiego.edu.  You can also call Karen Kitchen, Training & Development Coordinator, at ext. 2764.

What do I need to bring to a workshop?
Materials will be provided to participants, but it is always a good idea to bring a pen or pencil and perhaps some note paper.

Who is eligible to register for these workshops?
All USD faculty, administrators, and staff members are invited to attend the workshops offered unless otherwise specified in the workshop description.

Who do I call with questions?
Karen Kitchen, Training & Development Coordinator – Ext. 2764 or karenkitchen@sandiego.edu.

Can I get a record of all of the training sessions I have attended?
The Training & Development staff keeps track of workshop participants and can provide this information upon request.

How can we request a workshop that is not on the current schedule?
We are always looking for new ideas.  Please contact Karen Kitchen, Training & Development Coordinator, at ext. 2764 or karenkitchen@sandiego.edu to share your ideas or requests.

Can I earn a certificate for training?  How do I do that?
Yes, you can earn a certificate for demonstrating the skills you learned at a training session.  You will be asked to create an artifact to be reviewed by the Training & Development Coordinator for approval.  This is simple process and you are guaranteed support from the Training & Development staff to ensure your success.  If you would like more information, please contact Karen at ext. 2764 or karenkitchen@sandiego.edu.  You can also attend the Career Performance Portfolio workshop if it is being offered in the near future.  This workshop focuses specifically on artifacts that can be used for certificates.
