1) What is e-statement billing and e-payment?
Electronic statement billing (e-statement billing) & electronic payment (e-payment) is being offered to students by the University of San Diego. All charges to student accounts including tuition, fees, housing, and miscellaneous charges are available via USD E-Pay by viewing the Account Status screen. Effective October 2007, billing statements will be produced in electronic format only.2) Why is the University going to e-statement billing method?
There are several reasons why the University has decided to make e-statement billing available. Looking to the future, paperless student account statements are a goal that is consistent with the future of Universities nationwide. Many other applications and processes at the University will become paperless or electronic, bringing convenience and efficiency to our students and parents. Electronic statement billing continues this mission. The vast majority of students are familiar and comfortable with the web culture on campus and it has become more commonplace to perform many daily transactions and communications via e-mail and the Internet. Many institutions around the country are now adopting electronic statement as their primary method of statement billing and during these times of economic hardship, electronic statement billing brings time and monetary savings to both students and their families and the University.3) How am I notified when a new statement is available?
When a new statement has been posted to USD E-Pay, an e-mail message will be sent to the U-net student e-mail account, in addition to each e-mail account specified in either the student or authorized payer profiles within USD E-Pay.4) Do I have to be on e-statement billing? Can I get a paper statement instead of (or in addition to) the e-statement?
Effective October 2007, billing statements will be produced in electronic format only. There will be multiple notifications of the e-statement billing. All students are responsible for remitting payment according to the published payment deadlines. Students have 24 hour access to online bills and account balance; therefore, not receiving a paper bill will not be accepted as a reason to miss the payment deadline.5) What are the benefits & advantages of e-statement billing and e-payment?

6) I don't have a bank account (or I don't feel comfortable paying my statement online). How do I pay my statement?
Paying the statement electronically is optional. You can pay your statement by printing a (PDF) copy of the statement from the web, then sending it in with a check, money order, etc. to the address printed on the PDF version of your statement, which is:
University of San Diego
Cashier's Office - Hughes 207
5998 Alcala Park
San Diego, CA 92110-2492
You can also pay your statement in person at the University of San Diego Student Accounts Cashier's Office. Please note that e-payment online is safe and secure and is certified by VeriSign, the nation's largest online payment verification provider. Paying online is much easier and convenient than paying by mail or in person and saves you time and money!
7) Do you accept payments from non-United States bank accounts?
No. Any e-payments must be direct debited from a U. S. bank account. We are unable to accept payments from foreign bank accounts.
8) Can my payment be deducted directly from a checking or savings account? (ACH electronic check)?
Yes, by electronic check, or ACH (Automated Clearing House). You can choose to make a payment directly out of your checking account (electronic check), or savings account by providing your banking information. The payment will be deducted from your account via (ACH).9) Can I pay by credit card or debit card?
The University of San Diego no longer directly accept payments made by credit or debit card for tuition and fees. As a convenience to students and families, USD has contracted with a third party vendor to accept Master Card, Discover and American Express card payments on-line. VISA is not accepted. A convenience fee of 2.75% will be assessed by the vendor to payers making payment by credit card.
10) Why does USD no longer accept credit card payments for tuition and fee?
The merchant fees incurred by USD in order to accept credit card payments have increased annually, and have become prohibitively expensive (approximately $800,000 in 2003-2004). The high operating cost of accepting credit cards is funded by tuition and fees, and as such, increases in credit card fees are ultimately passed on to all students, not just those students paying by credit card. Ceasing to accept credit cards for tuition and fees is in the best long-term interest of USD's student and family population as a whole, and the University. The cost savings to the University will be invested in other student services and academic needs.11) Why is Visa not accepted by the third party accepting credit card payments on the University's behalf?
Visa's rules will not permit the vendor to charge a percent service fee and would require the University to charge the same fee for electronic check (ACH payments), which are accepted by USD free of charge.
12) Does the University charge for e-statement billing or e-payment?
No, the University offers this service free of charge.
13) How do I log in?
As a student, you can watch your University e-mail account (or other e-mail account specified by you upon registration) for your e-statement on each statement date. When you get your e-statement notification, you will click on a link to a secure web server and enter your Unet ID and Password. To keep all data confidential, do not share your passwords with anyone. After you login, you can view your e-statement, print a copy of the statement, forward the statement to someone in an e-mail, sign up authorized users, set up and store your bank account or credit card information, and make an online e-payment. Make sure to logout or close your browser when finished with e-statement/e-pay.
14) How can my parents pay my statement?
With the USD E-Pay system, you can set up your parent(s) or other authorized payers to make payments on your behalf. You will assign them a unique user name and password. Once in E-Pay, see the menu at the left side of your screen.
15) How do parents or other authorized payers login?
As a parent or other authorized payer, your student must first set you up as an authorized payer in the USD E-Pay system. He/she must provide your login name and password. You may then access the USD E-Pay by clicking here . After logging into the system, you can change your password, setup and store your own profile and account information, review the statement, view any past statements, make a payment, or view any past payments you have made on the student's behalf.
16) I'm a parent; how can I get a copy of my student's statement?
Your student has several options for providing a copy of his/her statement to third parties including parents, spouses, etc. through the USD E-Pay system:
- Your student can set you up as an authorized payer on his/her account, then as an authorized payer, you can view their statements at anytime. (This is required in accordance with he Federal FERPA regulations)
- Your student can forward you a PDF copy of the statement as an attachment to his/her e-mail account.
- Your student can print off a copy of the e-statement and provide it to you in hard copy format.
17) How can I make payment on my student's tuition statement?
Similar to students, you have several options for paying your student's statement:
- If your student has set you up as an authorized payer, you can login into the USD E-Pay web site, using the login name and password your student setup, and pay the statement electronically.
- You can also print off a copy of the statement and mail a payment (check, money order, traveler's check, or cashier's check written out to University of San Diego) to:
University of San Diego
Cashier's Office
5998 Alcala Park
San Diego, CA 92110-2492
18) Can I pay my student's statement before he/she has set me up?
Yes. You may make a payment using the student's name and USD ID number only. However, you will not be able to view their statement, or verify the amount due. This guest payment system allows you to make a payment to a student account which you specify by providing the name and ID number, for an amount which you specify. We encourage students to set parents up so that parents can view the student account before making a payment. This mitigates the risks associated with the manual entry of data such as student ID number.
- If your student has not yet set you up as an authorized payer, you can make a guest payment by clicking here.
- Remember that the payer must provide the student NAME and USD ID NUMBER. In addition, there will be no confirmation detailing your payment posting to the student's account.
