Family Nurse Practitioner

Admission

  • A BSN degree from an approved, accredited school*
  • Current California RN licensure
  • One year of clinical experience preferred
  • Basic computer literacy
  • A 3 semester credit course in statistics
  • A GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Completion of the University Application for Graduate Admission, including application fee
  • One official transcript from each college or university attended
  • Three completed recommendation forms (included in the Graduate Application)
  • The GRE general test is recommended but not required
  • Resume
  • Interview
  • Current baccalaureate level physiology and health assessment knowledge/skills
  • Student Nurse Practitioner professional liability and malpractice insurance coverage which must be maintained throughout enrollment
  • Evidence of specified immunizations and screening tests, a report of recent physical examination, and BLS certification
  • International applicants must meet additional requirements for admission http://www.sandiego.edu/admissions/graduate/international.php
*Applicants without a BSN must have an ADN or Diploma in Nursing from an approved, accredited program and a baccalaureate degree in a related field. In addition, they must take BSNC 333 and BSNC 447.

The application deadline is March 1. All materials must be received by this date.

Curriculum Plan

The FNP track requires completion of 42 academic units and a minimum of four semesters and one summer is needed for full-time study. A course sequence for full-time students in the FNP track is outlined below. Part-time study is also available.

Fall Semester, Year One

APNC 520 Pathophysiology 3 units
APNC 521 Primary Care: Physical Assessment and Diagnosis 4 units
NPTC 513 Behavior and Development: Birth through Adolescence 2 units
NPTC 514** Behavior and Development Practicum 1 unit

Spring Semester, Year One

MSNC 503 Nursing Practice with Diverse Families in Communities 2 units
APNC 523* Pharmacology in Health Management 3 units
MSNC 511 Evidence Based Practice: Role of Theory and Research 3 units
NPTC 528 Health Management of the Child 3 units
NPTC 538 Child Health Management Practicum 2 units

Fall Semester, Year Two

MSNC 512 Influencing the Health Care Environment: Policy and Systems 3 units
NPTC 530 Adult Health Management I 3 units
NPTC 531 Adult Health Management I Practicum 2 units
NPTC 582 Women's Health Care 2 units
NPTC 583** Women's Health Care Practicum 1 unit

Spring Semester, Year Two

NPTC 532 Adult Health Management II 3 units

*APNC 523 meets the furnishing requirements of the California BRN.

**NPTC 514 and 583 can be taken either fall or spring semester.
