Symantec Anti-Virus

Updated August 24, 2006.

NOTE: If you have another antivirus program installed on your computer, you will need to uninstall it to use SAV. If you have paid for a copy of either Norton AntiVirus or McAfee AntiVirus, these work just fine. Just make sure you have updated virus definitions and your subscription will not expire anytime soon. Also, many new computers come with free, 3 month trials of these programs. Make sure it is a full version that will last some time.

The following are NOT suitable virus protection software (or popup prevention):

PCcillin
eAnthology Stop Sign
HouseCall
VCatch
SurfinGuard
Pop-Up Stopper

Tech Support Center has in the past used a free virus scan software called AVG when SAV has not properly installed. While this is a good product, Symantec is more reliable and better updated. Not to mention, it too is free for all students of the University.

You can download Symantec AntiVirus from the following site: http://www.sandiego.edu/unet/virus

Once you have downloaded it, find the Symantec AntiVirus icon saved on your desktop and double click on it:

Eventually the welcome screen will appear. Click Next:

Step 1: After unzipping the file, the following window will appear preparing for Symantec installation.

Symantec AntiVirus is now running on your computer. This will detect incoming viruses as well as scan for any already on your computer.

Running Symantec AntiVirus

Go into your Start Menu, find your Program Files, then look for Symantec Client Security. Click Symantec AntiVirus Client:

On the window that appears, select Scan Computer on the left side menu:

This will change the right hand menu. Check the boxes of your hard drive to have a virus scan preformed on them:

The scanner will launch and will pop up an alert if any viruses are found:

It will also list all viruses that have been found:

When the virus scan is complete, simply close the open Symantec windows.
