The SOLES Mentor Program is a peer mentorship program designed to support student success by pairing first-year students with a continuing student or recent alumnus in their academic program. The program is an opportunity for SOLES students to foster a sense of community and belonging during graduate school while sharing resources and insights to make the most of their time at the University of San Diego.
SOLES partners with Mentor Collective to offer this mutually beneficial, participant-centered program to build a culture of mentorship that helps students achieve both personal and professional goals.
Program Overview
This opportunity pairs incoming students with a continuing student or recent graduate who uniquely understands the path they are embarking on. Mentees can look to their mentors as someone to lean on for guidance and support as they adjust to graduate student life.
To get started, participants register and complete a short matching survey as well as a brief on-demand training. From there, Mentor Collective will match the mentorship pairs, and participants are expected to connect at least twice per semester throughout the academic year on the communication platform of their choice.
Program Eligibility and Participation
Mentors must be a currently enrolled graduate student or recently graduated alumnus from SOLES.
Mentees must be a newly admitted incoming first-year SOLES graduate student.
Once paired, the program lasts for the fall and spring semesters of that academic year. Participants are expected to communicate at least twice per semester in whichever modality works best for the pair (e.g., in person, text, Zoom). Below are some sample questions you could discuss:
- What can I expect in my classes?
- Who can I reach out to for support on campus?
- How can I develop a relationship with faculty in my department?
- What tips do you have to set myself up for academic, social, and professional success?
- How can I balance the demands of graduate school with other responsibilities?
