We allow students to work at their own pace. Students enroll in a range of 3-12 units per semester depending on their intended completion time. Students can complete this program in as little as 12 months.
Yes! The program is designed for working professionals, with the majority of courses offered in the evening, occasional weekends, and online.
Courses with in person components are held every other week, from 5:30 p.m. - 8:45 p.m. during weekday evenings. In addition, all students participate in an international experience of their choosing—either in San Diego or abroad—that is designed to expand their global perspective and to enhance their ability to understand and lead diverse organizations.

We like to see letters from people who know you and with whom you have a professional relationship. Examples of appropriate recommenders are immediate supervisors, faculty or academic advisers and those who can speak to your academic performance are strongly encouraged.
Letters from personal acquaintances/friends are not encouraged.
This program is offered on campus at USD only. Beginning in fall 2026, 2 courses will be offered fully online, while other courses offer an online component.
Our students are a very diverse group. They reflect the racial, ethnic and religious diversity of our region. Students' work experience and ages vary widely and have earned bachelor's degrees across a wide spectrum of fields ranging from business, psychology, education and everything in between.
Students and alums have access to the USD Career Development center as well as a vast array of alumni networking opportunities. Upon completion of the degree our alumni often embark on career change or enhancement with 72% of our students report they have received a raise, new jobs or promotions as a direct result of their participation in our program.
Graduates of the MA in Leadership Studies go on to leadership roles in a wide variety of settings, including in consulting, education, business, nonprofit organizations and more. Some go on to doctoral study at the University of San Diego or elsewhere.
