USD Law Board of Visitors Member Hon. Michael S. Berg ʼ81 (JD) Recognized with San Diego Federal Bar Association Judicial Service Award

The University of San Diego (USD) School of Law applauds Board of Visitors member the Hon. Michael S. Berg ʼ81 (JD) for receiving the San Diego Federal Bar Association (FBA) Judicial Service Award.
Since 2018, Judge Berg has served as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He brings 36 years of experience as a criminal defense attorney to the bench. Deeply committed to community service, Judge Berg is the former chair of the California Board of Legal Specialization for the State Bar of California and past president of the Rancho Coastal Humane Society Board of Directors.
In 2023, Judge Berg received the law school’s highest alumni honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, which is bestowed on individuals who have set themselves apart through professional achievement and community service. In addition to being a Board of Visitors member, he is an active member of the USD Law community and a frequent guest speaker at workshops and symposia.
This annual award recognizes an exemplary federal jurist in San Diego and/or Imperial County who has provided outstanding service to the bench, the Federal Bar Association, and the federal community at large while promoting professionalism and civility. The recipient of the Judicial Service Award is further committed to improving access to the federal courts and upholding the rule of law. San Diego’s FBA Judicial Reception and Awards Ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 19 at the Carte Hotel.
