The Academic Review Committee (ARC) is part of the six-stage academic program review process at USD:
- Program self-study (with the utilization of data)
- External review team site visit and report
- Internal review team by Academic Review Committee (ARC) recommendations
- Development of an action plan (combined MOU/LTP stages into one)
- Annual reporting of action plan implementation progress
Per University Senate Policy 6.6, Committee membership consists of the ALO and non-administrator faculty as follows: three from the College of Arts and Sciences, two from the School of Business, and one from each of the other units represented in the Senate, except that the School of Peace Studies and the University Library will share one representative position that will alternate terms between the units. Faculty are recommended by deans and appointed by the Provost, but the faculty of any unit may require that its representative(s) be elected by their peers.
The ARC meets monthly to review a program or department's self-study, its external review team report, the department/program's response, and the dean’s response to the report. The ARC generates recommendations based on the academic program review materials and meeting discussion. The recommendations are forwarded to the department chair or program director, the dean, and the provost in advance of the long-term plan/memorandum of understanding (MOU)/action plan meeting. The implementation of the action plan is approved by the provost, dean, and department chair or program director.
