Theatre Student Lab

Student Lab is a laboratory process for students to learn and develop their craft through opportunities in writing, directing, design, performance and technical theatre.

Students are required to conceive of Student Lab with minimal use of props and scenic support, focusing on the theatrical interpretation of text, development acting, creative use of space and stirring the audience's creativity and imagination.

Student Lab guidelines

Students are responsible for securing costumes, props, furniture and content sound needs for the production. Directors do not have access to departmental costume stock for Student Lab.

  • Productions may be no longer than 90 minutes long.
  • The Department of Theatre provides the following for all Student Lab projects:
    • Venue for all auditions, rehearsals and presentations
    • Lighting equipment, sound equipment and rehearsal furniture
    • Photocopying, with limitations and approval through the department's executive assistant
    • Promotional support for Student Lab production
    • Full artistic support and feedback from all departmental faculty
  • Student Lab projects are required to use the "rep lighting plot" in the designated performance venue.
  • Request for alterations or additions to the lighting or sound plot must be made in writing and submitted to the production manager for final approval.
  • Performances are free and based on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are interested in directing Student Lab, please email the department chair and include your proposal, concept and any additional material. All proposals are reviewed by a committee made up of faculty members and the department chair.
