Dear USD Campus Community:

The County of San Diego currently requires essential businesses (including USD) to conduct temperature and health screenings for all employees. The guidelines prohibit employees with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher from entering the workplace.

The County also requires everyone to wear a face covering when they leave their place of residence. In our case, all persons must wear a face covering whenever they are on campus and within six feet of another person. With the health and safety of our entire campus community in mind, new temperature and health screening protocols for on-campus employees will begin the week of August 3. Employees who come to campus will be required to adhere to the protocols and procedures described below.

Symptom and Temperature Screening Steps

Step 1 – Before leaving your residence. Each day, all faculty and staff will receive an email from Qualtrics. The email will contain a self-declaration daily health check that asks faculty and staff to report:

1) If they intend to come to campus that particular day;
2) Health symptoms;
3) Recent travel and exposure to others with COVID-19.

Responses that rule out symptoms, recent travel and COVID-19 exposure will generate an automated notification to the faculty or staff member and to their supervisor or a central point of contact that certifies the person to enter campus on that day.

Step 2 – Upon arrival on campus. Before entering any campus buildings, faculty and staff will report to one of the temperature screening locations listed below. The individual will be required to show their daily certification email confirmation from Qualtrics; have their temperature taken with a non-contact thermometer; and click on the Qualtrics link to verify the temperature check. This will generate a message that they are certified to be on campus, and a temperature screening attendant will provide them with a wristband to wear before entering campus buildings.

Faculty and staff with temperatures of 100 degrees or higher will be prohibited from being on campus and will be advised to return home. Employees must also notify their supervisor if they were prohibited from being on campus due to a high temperature reading.

Qualtrics messaging will also provide a workflow to guide various scenarios.

Temperature screening will be provided outdoors at the following campus locations:

  • Student Life Pavilion (Active August 3 from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)
  • Paseo de Colachis - West (Active August 3 from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)
  • Manchester Village Apartments (Active TBD)
  • Alcala Vista Apartments (Active TBD)
  • Mata’yuum Crossroads (Active TBD)
  • Degheri Alumni Center (Active TBD)
  • Belanich Engineering Center (Active TBD)

  • Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Plaza (Active TBD)
  • West Parking Structure - Top Level (Active TBD)

Some departments may provide their own temperature screening, which must be approved in advance by the COVID-19 Action Team.

A modified schedule will be in effect prior to the beginning of the undergraduate Fall semester on August 17, with limited locations open for screening. Updated operating hours will be accessible on the Torero BluePrint website. Special arrangements have been made for late-night-shift employees and specific departments.

As Toreros, we have a shared responsibility to embrace the health and safety measures that we believe are in the best interest of our campus community. We are very excited to begin the Fall semester next month, and we believe the preventative measures provided in our guidelines for employees will serve us well in creating a safe, healthy and welcoming experience for our entire campus community!

Sincerely,

The COVID-19 Action Team
