This Weekend, Music, Culture at USD: Ole Music Fest; "Scheherazade"; Parasol Ball

Enjoy live music? Perhaps you’d like a little culture — pop or otherwise — too? This weekend, beginning tonight and concluding on Sunday, the University of San Diego has some quality options to choose from on campus.

Ole Music Fest, 6 p.m., Friday, Missions B Parking Lot

Beginning at 6 p.m., the annual Torero Program Board Ole Music Fest will take over the Missions B Parking Lot area. The scheduled performers are headliner Marc E. Bassy and featured act Jay Sean.

Bassy, a San Francisco-based singer-songwriter who formally was the lead singer for the L.A.-based pop band 2AM Club, has multiple solo record material to draw from. He’s collaborated with G-Eazy on a past EP. Songwriting-wise, Bassy has done songs for CeeLo Green, Sean Kingston, Wiz Khalifa and Ty Dolla Sign.

Jay Sean is an English singer-songwriter whose first big exposure was with the Rishi Rich Project on the UK’s Asian Underground music scene. Since then, he’s also connected by way of his music projects with such performers as Sean Paul, Lil Wayne and Lil Jon, among others.

Tickets can be purchased at the UC Box Office.

Rimsky Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” Friday, 7:30 p.m., Sunday, 2 p.m., Shiley Theatre

The Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra, directed by USD Music faculty member Dr. Angela Yeung, performs Rimsky Korsakov’s "Scheherazade."

The concerts feature winners of the 2019 Music Teachers Association of California Concerto Competition and two USD students: Daniel Campbell ('20), viola in Bruch's Romanze, and Elizabeth Tin-Maung ('20), violin in Monti's Czardas.

Also, there will be a special dedication for Reggie Smith, a longtime USD community supporter.

Tickets for this event are $5-$10.

USD Asian Students Association’s Parasol Ball, Saturday, 7 p.m., Hahn University Center’s Forum C

The Asian Students Association will host its fourth annual Parasol Ball. The Parasol Ball is a celebration of Asian culture through multiple activities. This year’s event features good food, booth activities, performances, music, a raffle for great prizes and more.

The event begins at 7 p.m. and dance performances beginning at 8 p.m. All students are welcome. Attendees are encouraged to dress to impress.
