USD Athletics Announces Bernie Bickerstaff Diversity and Inclusion Fund

As part of its core value in Championing a Culture of Diversity and Inclusion, University of San Diego Athletics announced the formation of the new Bernie Bickerstaff Diversity and Inclusion Fund to directly support programming and educational resources for Torero scholar-athletes.

Named in honor of one of the greatest Toreros of all time, the fund will provide holistic support, education, leadership and advocacy training for scholar-athletes, coaches and staff on diversity-related topics while also celebrating and empowering the USD Athletics community.

"We believe the Bernie Bickerstaff Diversity and Inclusion Fund will change lives," said Executive Director of Athletics Bill McGillis. "The Fund will support a broad spectrum of diversity initiatives in the athletic department that will enable us to better support Black scholar-athletes and to effect positive change in our community. We are called at USD to be the Changemakers who confront humanity's urgent challenges and this powerful new fundraising initiative will do just that."

Bickerstaff – USD's first Black head coach, a former team captain and player, and a USD Athletics and WCC Hall of Famer – has worked in the NBA for more than 40 years. He is currently a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers front office.

"In addition to helping create a world-class experience for our scholar-athletes, I am proud to have Coach Bickerstaff as part of the Fund," added McGillis. "There is no better way to honor the legacy of Coach Bickerstaff, an exceptional Torero who has made a lasting impact at USD and in every community in which he has served."

USD Athletics has been working closely with Torero scholar-athletes over the summer to identify ways of enhancing the experience of Black scholar-athletes and do its part in eradicating racism. Specific initiatives that have been crafted so far are in the areas of education, activism, leadership, forums, and voting support and education. USD Athletics is also creating an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan to specifically identify further actions that can also be supported by the Bernie Bickerstaff Diversity and Inclusion Fund.
