Message from the VP for Student Affairs

Welcome all new and returning Toreros!

This marks a new beginning to an extraordinary journey filled with excitement, new friends and a year filled with Torero Spirit.

What is Torero Spirit? It’s hundreds of USD students engaging in community service-learning projects in Tijuana. It’s the roar of a crowd at a Torero football game. It’s the uplifting connection of faith and virtue at the Sunday Night Mass in Founder's Chapel.

Torero Spirit can also be subtle, like embracing the inclusive spirit of our campus community through a conversation with students who may be different than you, but who share your passion for life and learning. It’s also celebrating with students like Nathan Phillips and Kyle Sharp, who rode their bikes to USD from Washington and San Francisco, respectively, to raise money for Invisible Children, a San Diego-based organization seeking to end the conflict in Central Africa and stop the use of children as soldiers.

We are one family, whatever our ethnic, economic and ideological differences may be. Understanding the moral significance of solidarity means learning that "loving our neighbor" has global dimensions in an interdependent world.

In the next four years, we want you to be successful on our campus. We hope that you aspire to achieve academic excellence, experience and contribute to USD's commitment to diversity and inclusion, develop through self-reflection and compassionate service, explore your leadership potential, and be well in body, mind and spirit.

Your success at USD will be directly proportional to the amount of time and effort you invest in yourself, your fellow Toreros and our campus community. The college experience doesn't just happen and it's not the same for every student. We encourage you to take an active role by joining a club, trying out for intramurals, volunteering with the Center for Awareness, Service and Action or visiting the Alcalá Bazaar.

As a USD family and community, we are here to help you explore your choices and find the answers that will make your college experience everything that you want it to be, and more. Your years at USD will be exciting, inspiring and defining, and we look forward to sharing that journey with you.
