HRSA Project TeamUP Stipend Recipient Spotlight

HRSA Project TeamUP Stipend Recipient Spotlight
Hello! My name is Ana Carbonell, and I am a third-year in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling
program at USD. I am making my way towards graduation in May 2020! I have been very
involved in my graduate experience at USD. I am a SOLES ambassador, a former president of
CSI, and have been able to pursue research and seminar opportunities with faculty, and through
the HRSA grant. I’ve loved my time at this university.

This year, I have been placed at South Bay Guidance Center in Chula Vista for my practicum
site. I have absolutely loved my experience there, and have learned so much! I have amazing
supervisors who give me the freedom to try new things, yet also provide me a safety net to fall
back on when I need advice or help. I’ve been able to start an art group at the site, which I
never could have done without their support of my ideas. I work predominantly in one-on-one
sessions with both English and Spanish speaking adults.

Receiving the HRSA grant has allowed me to fully dedicate my time and effort to my practicum
site. It has given me freedom from needing a job outside of my practicum. Because of my ability
to focus on practicum, I have become more confident in my abilities to be a bilingual counselor. I
have learned better interpreter skills, and have been able to work with linguistically diverse
communities at South Bay. I’ve also been able to attend informative seminars through HRSA
that have helped my language development skills, and have given me tools to attack cultural
differences.

I am so thankful for the faculty at USD and their open-door policy, for my mentors that have
allowed me to invest in my passions, and to HRSA for all the opportunities associated with the
grant. Following graduation, I am hoping to move back to my home-state of Florida and work
with the Latino population there. I will ideally be able to work in an agency with adult, Spanish-
speaking clients.

My advice to prospective students would be: Say yes to opportunities! So many things have
happened for me during this program because I said “why not.” Also, seek help if you have
questions. The faculty and staff at USD are in your corner - they are available to answer any
questions, and are eager to help you become the best counselor you can be!
