The SOLES Graduate Student Writing Center

Still Available Online

About:

The SOLES Graduate Student Writing Center is a virtual space designed to accommodate both online or on-campus graduate students for whom distance or busy schedules conflict with coming to campus. The Center's free web-based service provides students with feedback on digital versions of their assignments and offers one-on-one coaching sessions via remote conferencing.

Mission:

The mission of the SOLES Graduate Student Writing Center is to provide all students, of all skill levels and at all stages of the writing process, with access to free writing coaching to support the discovery and development of their potential as emerging writers.

Philosophy:

Our philosophy is to support the development of better writers, not just better papers; therefore, we strive to help students develop the skills to independently revise their own writing. Our sessions and workshops focus on the processes of critical thinking, planning, drafting, revising, and editing that lead to writing that is clear, coherent, and impactful.

Through individual in-person and online appointments, our coaches work with students using instruction that is differentiated to meet the individual’s skill level, targets particular issues, and offers directed learning. With collaboration, discussion, and process-oriented revision, our method helps to relieve anxiety and demystify the writing process for students. Our approach is designed to serve you whether you have a polished draft or just a basic outline of notes.

Goals:

  • Our student learning goals are for students to develop confidence as writers and ease with the writing process and to learn the skills to produce clear and effective writing.
  • Our program goal is to promote student success through writing for the benefit of students’ academic and professional lives.

The coach will devote 50 minutes of the hour to working with you on your assignment and will use the remaining ten minutes to write an email summary of the session with follow-up next steps.

Individual writing coaching appointments are a maximum of 1-hour and students may reserve one appointment per week for a maximum of three appointments per semester.
