John Callery joined the University of San Diego following the completion of his undergraduate degree in the School of Business Administration. In his three year tenure as a Web developer for USD and the School of Leadership and Education Sciences, he started the university’s official social networking initiative, served as the information architect and committee member of the USD website redesign, has implemented a university-wide blogging platform for students, faculty, staff and departments, and has redesigned numerous websites for other departments on campus.
During his high school and college careers, John founded and operated a Web hosting and design firm, Callery Networks, Inc., which he sold in 2007, and also served on the board of directors for Thai Circle, a small nonprofit that provides scholarships to impoverished students in Thailand.
His professional career outside of the university includes working with small businesses and startups on Web communication strategies, and serving as the executive director of an online community he created in 2004.
The online community, Thinner Times, is a peer support communication platform for pre and post-operative weight loss surgery patients. The mission of the community is to increase the success rate of weight loss surgery by providing comprehensive pre and post-operative education materials, and by providing a forum for members to communicate with one-another. The community has more than 27,000 members and receives over a million hits monthly from 192 countries and territories. John is also working with his father, Charles D. Callery, M.D., F.A.C.S., to create the first Web-based mentoring program for weight loss surgery patients.
Aside from professional interests, John enjoys the San Diego Symphony, frequent travel, sailing, and flying airplanes.
