Certificate in International School Counseling

Develop culturally focused skills and sensitivities.

Offered as a Graduate Certificate or a Professional Certificate, the International School Counseling Certificate is ideal for candidates who work as school counselors or in counseling-related positions in International schools. It is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to effectively provide counseling and develop school counseling programs in international schools.

Candidates meet online every other week in groups with a dedicated instructor. The format of the class is collegial and case presentations are used as the main mechanism of instruction. All content areas (e.g. systems, multicultural perspectives) are approached as a series of lenses that can be applied to cases with increasing complexity.

Coursework

Gain the competencies to provide and develop a school counseling program with a Certificate in International School Counseling. Students acquire career, academic and social-emotional counseling knowledge directly applicable to the international school setting.

Pursue the certificate for graduate-level credit* (9 units are transferable to USD MA in Counseling, School Counseling program) or professional development through Professional Continuing Education.

Professional Development

The International School Counseling Certificate is offered by the USD School of Leadership and Education Sciences’ Counseling & Marital and Family Therapy department, and facilitated by the Division of Professional and Continuing Education. The certificate is designed for professional practice with the goal of enhancing counseling skills to international school students.

Meet our Faculty

Ian Martin, PhD

Associate Professor of Counseling

Dr. Ian Martin teaches courses in school counseling and career development. Prior to becoming a counselor educator, he was a school counselor in Portland, Oregon.

Involved in international school-based counseling, Dr. Martin has taught numerous international courses in South America, Europe and the Caribbean; and was a visiting scholar at the University of Verona, Italy.
