Meet the Chief

Chief James Miyashiro
Assistant Vice President for Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety is staffed 24 hours a day to serve the University of San Diego campus community. We believe that a safe community is the responsibility of the entire community. It is our desire to provide you with information that will assist you in enjoying a successful and rewarding educational experience at USD. We believe this process begins by becoming an active member in your campus community. You are encouraged to get involved in the safety of the campus by attending safety education programs and when necessary, reporting suspicious activity to the Department of Public Safety.

Most of the crimes, which occur at USD, involve "crimes of opportunity." The people who commit these acts simply take advantage of the opportunities provided to them. Personal property that is left unattended and later becomes stolen is the most frequently occurring example of crimes of opportunity at USD. Each of us must make a conscious effort to minimize such opportunities.

We strongly believe that an informed community is a safe community. Within this website, you will find weekly crime reports, crime alerts and annual crime statistics. Please take a few minutes to review these important sections and become familiar with this information. Should you have safety questions that are not covered in this report, please call the Department of Public Safety at (619) 260-7777 or send me an e-mail at and we will do whatever is possible to assist you in addressing your concerns.
